After clearing more space and ordering more Battlefoam, I bought some Guardsmen to use as Cultists and some Tempestus Scions to fill the gap of my existing "Cultists" (Starfleet Marines minis). I've thought about it and have gotten into the idea of building a Guard army. Very slowly as, while space is there, it is limited. I want a semi-competitive build as well (best list I've seen in my local metal is 3-4 Valkyries, basilisks, and vets) and prefer having at least a patrol detachment of Scions. Any suggestions on what to get/build? (Feel free to count the 57 Starfleet Marines as any combination of vets, Guardsmen, or Tempestus Scions. You don't have to as I'm proxying more out of want than necessity.)

In my head guard is all about Boys Before Toys. Since I'm going Cadians that means my first 12 choices in any army is six Infantry Squads, three Heavy Weapons Squads, and three Veterans squads. That's the start of every Guard army.
And it's only around 600 points.
Next comes the tanks. Two Leman Russ Battle Tanks and a Basilisk.
Then to round off the Brigade I need three Fast choices. Three Armored Sentinels. More Heavy Weapons, a little mobility, and because of their wound count they can hide among the Infantry.

Why the veteran squad? Once kitted with 3x plasma, they are pretty expensive and still squishy. If you're not running special weapons I think you'd be better off with an IS. And platoon commander (also 60 points).
Why armored sentinels? Scouts give you the scout move and armored sentinals dont seem to offer much improvement in T or armor.
Do you mean more heavy weapon teams to hide in infantry squads?
Not bashing on your choices, still trying to figure out guard in 8th

Infantry, scions, sentinels - I like sentinels.
Tauroxes - two, maybe.
Add a tank, then a tank for every additional screening/support unit from there until you are happy.

Not bashing on your choices, still trying to figure out guard in 8th
for 5 points you get +1 T and 3+. I don't want a Scout move since I keep the Sentinels screened by Infantry.
My Infantry Squads & Heavy Weapons Teams sit & shoot, buffed by Cadians Doctrine and Commanders & Lieutenants shouting "Take Aim!"
I use the Vets with Plasma Guns to advance on objectives. They are my mobile units. Their 3+ BS offers the best use of massed Plasma Guns, particularly when buffed by Cadians Doctrine and a Commander shouting "Take Aim!"
I use the Armored Sentinels as either extra heavy weapons screened by the infantry, or in support of the Vets as they advance.
But, depending on your point count, at some point you've got to add Scions to your army as objective grabbers. I wait to add them because they're not Cadians. /mad/

So, will I want to make sure I have some points left over to add a Patrol detachment of Scions?
Also, will my Squads be mainly foot slogging? Or should I also get some Chimeras at some point?

Transports arent popular this edition but things change, last edition you wanted them. I have 3, most things IG are worth taking in atleast 3s. Get priests, commisars and atleast 2 command boxes. Everything else comes natural to what you like

Unless you go crazy with tanks then you will never have to worry about "making room" in a Guard army.
For example my 2000 point IG Brigade has 6 Infantry squads, 3 Vet Squads, 3 Scion squads, 3 Heavy Weapons squads, 6 of various officers, 3 Sentinels, and I STILL have room for two tanks and a Basalisk, PLUS after buying all kinds of various upgrades I STILL have points left over.
That's over 140 Infantry models, PACKED with Heavy Weapons & Plasma Guns. Cadians Doctrine, three Company Commanders, three Platoon Commanders, and Booming Voice on your Warlord. Then just stand back and shoot.
This edition IG has synergy that other armies only DREAM OF.
