I finally bought a box of Rune Golems because I love their look, but they are getting rebased on 50mm rounds for fantasy skirmish games for my Dwarves.

Battlelore is my favorite board game of all time, and FFG managed to kill three different versions of it! FFG has become the EA of board gaming.

Not surprising. Everyone I knew that saw it thought it was the most generic looking fantasy miniatures they could think of. Very safe and Warcraftish that they didn't feel a connection to its universe.

That was faster than I thought it would die. Not even 2 years since they were handing out starters at adepticon. They missed the mark by about a year. If they'd come out with it when AoS launched with 4 full factions they may have made it. Oh well.

This was my main issues. Obviously there are people that like the Warcraft cartoony look but it's not my thing, for miniature's at least.

IIRC, Dakkanauts weren't too wild about the sculpts and miniature quality (they liked the golems or something), so, particularly with Mantic around, I dunno how well RW would have done with existing competition.

Additionally, FFG has so many product lines that, while it has enough money to support a miniatures line, it doesn't have to. Launch several game lines, look at the sales, and keep the ones that make money. This is fine for selling boardgames (sell the base game and its first expansion, then see if there's demand for a second one), but not miniatures, as anyone who played Battlelore will tell you. With X-Wing, Armada, Legion, and RW that's four miniature lines to support. Add to that the AH LCG, Star Wars Destiny Dice Game, and Keyforge. LCG'ers will add that FFG dropped the license for the Netrunner LCG, a product line I'd say was more popular than RW.

I'm a sucker for miniatures on clearance... But even at blowout prices I don't think I'll spring for any of the Runewars stuff. They are all just kind of boring average to mediocre sculpts.

You can still make generic tropes look good with the right sculpts. You can also make them look very "nice sculpts for 2003". FFG achieved the second one.

As I recall, a lot of people complained about the number of tokens and dials on the board, and general board game clutter. The miniatures are decent enough quality (certainly on par with other board game plastic miniatures) and I personally think they are better than Mantic's general output. RWM was a good game that was too board gamey for miniature gamers and too miniature gamey for board gamers, lacking a decent license to push people past their initial reticence.

With X-Wing, Armada, Legion, and RW that's four miniature lines to support.
Well, they are really only supporting two of those now. Don't forget Dust Tactics, Tannhauser, Imperial Assault, Wings of War, Tides of Iron, BattleLore, and I think there was a Mutant Chronicles game in there somewhere. FFG has failed spectacularly at every single miniatures game it has done, except X-Wing. Jury is still out on Legion.

LCG'ers will add that FFG dropped the license for the Netrunner LCG, a product line I'd say was more popular than RW.
It was not FFG's decision to drop Netrunner. Whatever crap I give FFG from this moment forward (which will be plenty and without mercy), I absolutely appreciate their work on resurrecting Netrunner and supporting it for years. They are who I'd want to resurrect the old Decipher Star Wars CCG, if it could be done.

WoTC made them shut down the Netrunner LCG but apparently they still have the license for RPGs as they're still releasing supplements for that.

FFG licensed the Netrunner game system from WotC, but the Android universe is their own. So, if Wizards decides to release a Netrunner game in the future, it'll probably be in the same RPG setting the original one was (Cyberpunk 2077).

I'll cast my vote on the uninspiring model lineup. I thought the rules looked quite interesting, but between the 2D terrain and very very bland character designs, there just wasn't a faction that I was excited enough to buy into.

ya, that's right. Forgot that Android and Netrunner are two different things.

They needed to spend the effort on games like Armada, rather than Runewars, IMHO. FFG is great at letting games with really good concepts just.....wither.

I don't mind the Warcraft look personally, but it was just.. They had no character to them.

Though now I kind of want an actual Warcraft minatures game. They already have a ton of factions they could make models for and I'd love a Twilight Hammer Cho'gall.

I remember how a few years ago several people were wishing that GW would go bankrupt and FFG would buy the IP so that the franchise would be in the hands of competent game makers...

A million times, NO! FFG can't stick with a project long enough.

You missed the World of Warcraft minis game by more than a decade.
There was a pre-painted game that briefly showed up on store shelves and quickly disappeared. It was at the end of the PPP Era, so it's not really a wonder it failed.
I don't suspect there is enough of an audience for the IP outside of video games.
All the folks really into Wow that I know, usually don't so much else besides play Wow for a hobby. So trying to engage that demographic outside of the a tual game is a difficult uphill battle at best.

I remember those. They were pretty good PPP for the time. I think a Warcraft game would do well now days, as table top games are a lot more mainstream then they were like 10-12 years ago, if WoW was near the hight of its popularity but Blizzard isn't that company anymore and its really hard to see them making it a cultural thing again especially with the movie flop.

Still weird they essentially walled-off the game from even their own other product.

The first thing this game should‘ve done was publish an „Index“ for all existing Descent miniatures to be used with Runewars, if not books for „generic“ Undead/Elves/Dwarves/etc..., if only for „casual play“, to incentivize people with existing collections to give it a try.

We know they really would not do that. They wouldn't even do it for Imperial Assault when they produced Legion. They wanted people to buy brand new things for their product.

Not unless WotC renews itself the license of the CP2020 setting from R. Talsorian Games.

At the end of the day, FFG expected RuneWars to sell like gangbusters but it did not. It did not because it was just another build-and-paint fantasy game released in an over-crowded marketplace. The setting and models were not astounding or amazing, which very much is needed for a game like this to be successful.

Additionally, it was released too late to capitalize on the disenfranchised Warhammer Fantasy players and released too late to avoid the new edition of Warhammer 40k. The announcement of Legion did little to help the fledling Rune Wars.

If I were to go back in time, I would create 4 factions for the game and begin the game by releasing a starter set for each. The starter sets would not have to contain a ton of models or units, just enough to give players a taste of the real game. I would then make sure wave two was released pretty swiftly after the starter sets, with at least one box per faction.

I think that would have gone a long way towards making Rune Wars more appealing from day one. From a personal stand point, I am a much bigger fan of the two later factions that FFG released (the elves and The Uthuk Y'llan) than I am the two factions that RuneWars began with. Had they been available from day 1, I think I would have been much less reticent to jump on the RuneWars bandwagon.

Regardless, if/when FFG decides to make a new war game in the future, they need to look at what did and did not work with RuneWars and carry those lessons forward or else they will perpetually be locked into supporting licensed material.

Considering they literally stopped releasing RuneWars products for the six months leading up to Legion, no it did not. They announced the Darnati Warriors about a year before they were actually released.

That would be a real good start. FFG's release schedule is maddening, and they did RuneWars a big disservice with it. Not only did it take half a year to even have 4 factions, it took a year and a half for those factions to actually have the same number and types of units available (after which, FFG promptly cancelled the game). The Latari Elves didn't even have infantry melee units for majority of RuneWars. And if you played the first two factions, you got everything in the first four months - then had to wait a year for the next release. At least with Legion, there's only two factions, so you get something for your faction every two months. With RuneWars, the first two factions were not balanced against each other (the undead created blight, and the Daqan removed blight).

Had they been available from day 1, I think I would have been much less reticent to jump on the RuneWars bandwagon.
I was reticent because of how FFG treated BattleLore, so I guess I can't say I'm particularly surprised that FFG is doing what it has always done.

Legion will be getting two more factions soon with CIS and Republic, so that's going to be fun to see how things end up there in response.

Kings of War, and the skirmish version, Vanguard, are both excellent. If you can, rebase your guys into the appropriate square bases (I used hot water and a fresh Xacto blade, it was very easy to remove them)

My Human Runewars army is now officially fighting for the Kings of War Basileans! And the undead, well. They're undead!

I play...

Sigh.

Who am I kidding? I only paint these days...

I actually bought Latari just to use in Vanguard Nice figs, but no way in hell I'd ever actually play RW

The game looked way too much like a FFG board game and not enough like a miniatures game. The interlocking movement trays and movement templates were a major turnoff, all coupled with the order dials, custom dice, enormous amount of tokens and cards and the 2D terrain it just looked like an unfun mess on the table.

I'm sure it was great tactically, a few towns over there's a really big following from a lot of the old hardcore WHFB players, but for me it just looked too gimmicky and not wargamey enough.

My FLGS sent out a email saying the new CP book was coming out THIS week. It might just be updated timeline from the decades that have passed, but my understanding from 5minutes fi searching was R. talsorian Games was making a for lack of a better term third edition with new rules and such. So I don’t see WotC or anyone else getting a license.

RuneWars was actually a rather exceptional game. I think you are wrong on just about everything you said. Legion is far worse about all that stuff, while with RWM, it works in its favor. Rather than gimmicky, I think it was more gamey. It was something where the mechanics existed to make for an interesting game, not to be thematic or to simulate actual battlefield conditions. It was unapologetically mechanical, but that's what made the game so much fun to play.

I won't bother to sell you on the game now (for obvious reasons), but of all the complaints I've heard, the idea that it was an unfun mess is the one I absolutely can not agree with. As a BattleLore fan, I wanted to hate the game, but I ended up loving it. FFG can go to hell though.
