Hello all,

I just received my Rangers and will be using them today but am not completely sure how deploying them works with the FAQ rule. These are the 3 different possibilities, I'd love it if someone would tell me which, if any, are illegal and/or which is the correct way to do it.

1) After both armies have deployed, but before the first turn (before or after we know who is going first and seize the initiative is attempted?) I can place them anywhere more than 9" away from an enemy. This means during deployment I place them in the webway? Or they don't count for my number of drops and are dropped after deployment?

2) During deployment I place them anywhere more than 9" away from the enemy (this is how the Space Marine player played his Scouts, but maybe they work differently?)

3) They must be placed within my deployment zone due to the changes to the reserves rule.

I feel like it's #1, but I just want to be sure. Does it work basically how Infiltrate used to work (with different measurements)?

It’s number one. When it’s their turn to be a ‘drop’ declare they’ll deploy via their special rule, then after all regular deployment place them.

Rangers basically get the Forward Operatives stratagem for free baked into their rules. They set up after deployment but before the first turn begins, and may be set up anywhere more than 9" from the enemy.

You can, of course, spend CP to put them in the Webway to arrive on turn 2 or 3.

Or you can put them in the webway via their rule, have them not show up before the first turn, then die on turn 3 because they have no other way of arriving to the battlefield.

Hahah. Good to know my options, right?

Do I place them before or after I know who is getting the first turn? Literally speaking, I'm guessing it's before since after deployment is before rolling off to go first and seizing initiative. Yes?

Their rule Appear Unbidden references the Webway too. You’re incorrectly conflating that with the Webway Strike Stratagem.

It's after rolling off to see who goes first. I misspoke when I said it happens after deployment. I mean, it technically does, but it happens "At the start of the first battle round but before the first turn begins". The start of the first battle round is after rolling to seize.

I use them as my 1st "drops" so that I can see some of the opponents drops before deciding what to "actually" put down.
Then once we are all dropped, the Rangers can deploy and are not affected by the Beta FAQ, as they are worded the same as Forward Operatives.

I then use them as screens to create a "buffer zone" between my heavy hitters and potential enemy drops/melee units.

If I can't take Windriders as my core anymore, Rangers are a good second choice.
