So I posted this in the 40k reddit but it's so easy to get lost in all the upvoted posts there so I thought I'd ask you lovely lot.
So myself and a friend are doing a large battle as we've both always wanted to try something bigger than the small-mid games we play at our local GW. We're trying to pick a mission that will make the most of it.
I'm bringing Thousand Sons and he's bringing Raven Guard, we're both bringing 2,500 pts, both our lists are predominantly infantry as neither of us have a great deal of heavy stuff, we're using matched play rules, however we're happy to try any mission so long as it's fun. While we want this to be an epic battle, we're also playing to have some fun.
I've been looking at all the missions in the main rule book, and while there are a few that seem cool, sometimes that doesn't translate to the tabletop. I figured it'd be best to ask those who have actually played these missions (all we've played are the Eternal War missions and a Planetstrike one from Chapter Approved between us). For the sake of this question, assume we have access to everything, the main rule book, CA, Cards etc.
Thanks in advance!

I would check out the ITC missions and the NOVA missions, both offer in my opinion better games than what you find in the BRB.

I always like using the Open War cards. It keeps things fresh and fun, and with a bit of logical thought to compare to Matched Play, works really well!

Meeting Engagement
Standard 6'x4' table. Three Objective Markers along the center line of the table, no closer than 18" to each other.
Dice off. Winner had the choice of EITHER going first OR pick of Deployment Zone.
Deployment Zone is up to 12" from one long table edge. Deploy ONLY Fast Attack elements not held in Reserve.
Turn One up to One Half of Troops choices may arrive via the player's long table edge OR Deep Strike, if allowed, in their OWN Deployment Zone. HQ, Elite, and Heavies may NOT Deep Strike at all Turn One.
Turn Two remaining Troops arrive, as well as HQ and Elite units not held in Reserve. HQ & Elite arrive via the long table edge. If HQ or Elite units are allowed to Deep Strike they must Deep Strike in their own Deployment Zone. Troops and Fast Attack Units held in Reserve arrive via the long table edge or if they are allowed to arrive via Deep Strike they may Deep Strike anywhere no closer than 9" to an enemy unit. Heavies may NOT arrive.
Turn Three Heavies may arrive on the long table edge.
Turn Four & Five proceed as normal.
Turn Six uses Night Fight rules. In the Shooting Phase any target more than 24" away gets a -1 To Hit modifier. Any target more than 36" away may not be targeted at all.

My group played the siege scenario with Nids vs Blood Angels and Primaris Ultramarines. It was a surprisingly even game and actually pretty fun.

2500 is pretty normal sized. All the regular missions work fine. Me and my friends used to consider 2500 our standard game size, it's not a big deal.
If you want a custom scenario, I'd set up a 8x6 or 8x4 board, with deployment zones along the long edge and a 24" no-man's land. Set up objectives [as many as you like, 4-6 are good] at thematic spots on your board [ie: a bridge, a square, a key building], and fight for control of them. Score at the end, or progressively, as you see fit.

My2c? It's not really that fun if your big stuff sits in reserve. Also this scenario is even more biased than marmatag says the scenarios I proposed elsewhere were.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades! |

I second the Open War cards- they’re great for variety in your games. And if you see something you don’t like, you can always take it out of the deck/draw another card.

Thanks for the tips guys. I'm seeing the Open War cards being suggested a lot so it's looking like the way to go. I have found a few others in the narrative play section that I like the look of. Just have to see what my mate says now.
I do appreciate that 2500pts isn't exactly huge by general standards but it will be the biggest battle either of us have played. We normally play whatever tournament is running at the local GW and that's never gone above 1000pts so we're looking forward to this.
Thanks again for the suggestions, and please keep any more coming, always good to get some more ideas.
