Subject: Guilliman's Inglorius Bastards

Hey! I'm quite new to the hobby, and I would like to ask a question about Destroyer Marines. I've bought the Dark Imperium box set, and I've figured I'll paint the Space Marines as Ultramarines - despite the animosity towards them I've picked up. The Roboute Guilliman mini just ticks all the boxes for me personally. Can't wait to paint him. Anyways: I really enjoy the grimdark aspect of the 40k universe, and would like to grimdark my marines up a bit. So, I was thinking I could paint the Hellblasters squad in the colors of the old Destroyer Marines, just because it would look cool. I'm thinking I could possibly justify it by them beeing a new unit introduced by Guilliman for some reason. Maybe as an homage to this Kletos character or something? Any suggestions? Would this be contrary to alle established lore and an eyesore to more veteran players? Kjetil

might be a problem given Gulliman never much cared for the Destroyers, but if you like the paint job you like the paint job, don't let canon stop you from painting whats fun.

Paint them any way you like!
The only thing I would say is that when you're getting started some variety in paint scheme often seems like a good idea but a more uniform paint scheme across the army almost always looks better.
My advice would be to do some test paint schemes on some spare minis (if you don't have any spares look for horribly painted stuff going cheap on ebay or facebook) and if you like the destroyer scheme then go for it across your whole army.

Thanks! I think I'll heed that advice.
Anyways, how strict are the Ultramarines now?
I read somewhere that the returned Guilliman has revised the Codex Astartes, "seeking to eliminate its most of its restrictions on the Space Marines upon seeing the shortcomings of over-adherence to it, especially from Chapters of his gene-seed".
And altso that he's sort of pragmatic and look to other chapters for tactical inspiration etc?

Pretty much. He is an absolute pragmatist.
Plus if you paint in a non standard scheme you can just say they're UM for rules purposes and do anything you want for fluff.

Thanks!
And about the uniform look thing. I'm thinking other armies I've seen look pretty great with some deviation, like mostly red Blood Angels with black marines from the Death Company. But I'll ponder it!

There's nothing stopping you from painting them whatever you want. On the other hand however, loads of different schemes may get confusing, but if it's just one squad painted differently then there's very little chance of that happening, just make sure you make it clear with the opponent that there's nothing different rules-wise

Most of the changes Gulliman has made are pretty minor structual ones, such as squads from reserve companies being posted directly with a battle company now. this is IMHO mostly GW addressing a mild silly bit of fluff to model inconstancy. generally most people paint up their minis as a single company. but it's very possiable to have a force of say... 2 tac squads and 3 devestator squads. in canon before 8th edition and most players would paint that up as 1 company (useally second with the gold trim), technicly that shouldn't happen and one of those devestator squads should be proably from a reserve company with a seperate trim. Now you can do all the trims the same and not break canon. a nice little tweek.

My personal tip is that if you're going to vary the scheme, take a key tip from Eldar and other armies that have varied units of different colors: use a spot color to tie everything together. It'll give the army a more cohesive feel even if there is a wide array of colors on the table in it.
