I always have more building projects then I could ever hope to finish. My next project that I may or may not dedicate myself to is a list of imperial guard with space marines in drop pods. A classic image of guards holding the line untill space marines come to the rescue. Then it struck me how awesome the primaries look next to the guardsmen. So I was thinking of building an astartes detatchment (maybe 500p ish for starters) out of primaris models. Is this doable without outrageous amounts of conversions? Is it also something people would accept even though it’s practically proxing?
To clarify: what are people’s thoughts on using primaris models with regular astartes rules?
His pattern of returning alive after being declared dead occurred often enough during Cain's career that the Munitorum made a special ruling that Ciaphas Cain is to never be considered dead, despite evidence to the contrary.
Go nuts, I wouldn't care. It'll be a pain in the ass converting some units though, and you're stuck with obnoxiously expensive and poorly equipped characters. If anything, you're better off using them as normal marines so you can actually use a variety of wargear.
I think noone would be against it. Guards are better at killing stuff than marines anywayz. A guardsman with frf srf will deal the same amount of damage vs meq as a marine. But will cost 3 times less. But the image is fun, yes.

I feel like this is likely to happen anyway, but in reverse. GW will eventually release Primaris Marines with similar options to Tacs/Dev/ASM/Bikes. And I'm sure a Codex will eventually be released that effectively merges regular Marines with Primaris.
Maybe not tomorrow, maybe not in a year or five, but eventually.
When that happens, players with be free to use whatever version of Marines they have/want to use.
As a side note, I've seen a few players with Marine lists that have both Tacs and Primaris and when painted the same, on the same bases and at arm's length, it's hard to tell which is which.
If you have no units being run as Primaris, and no vanilla-SM models in the list? That's more Counts-as than Proxy at that point. I think it'd be awesome! Nobody would have problems with it.
If you have some other vanilla SM models of PA Marines, it might look a little odd having them right next to Primaris models using the same rules.
If you have Primaris models playing as PA Marines, and other Primaris models playing as Primaris, I think we're in problem territory. I think I'd accept it, and so would most, but it'd be a strong negative.
I'd say, go nuts. I considered doing that myself, but I never had a problem with the size of the old (or regular, however you might want to see that). If people don't have a problem with truescale marines, they must not have a problem with Primaris as regular marines.
Rule of Cool makes me say "hell yes, that's awesome". If it enthuses you to build and paint something cool, and you're clearly not doing it to drop some kind of unbeatable combo onto the table, then go for gold! Just remember to be up-front about everything to your opponent and I don't see any reasonable person having an issue. If they do, it's likely someone you don't want to game with anyway.

Anyone with the slightest shred of pattern recognition?
9th edition will be the death of old marines. GW will either convert their statlines and models to Primaris, while keeping the loadouts, or totally phase out the old marine squads entirely, relegating them to Index only.
If you're willing to do a little modelling, it's actually pretty easy to do a Primaris/Classic conversion. Also as long you don't use bikes. Reivers are assault marines, hellblasters are plasma special weapons dudes. Heavy plasma hellblasters are plasma cannons. I've seen people successfully kitbash the normal marine weapon arms onto Primaris torsos but this does need careful planning.

I'd be interested too because as far as I can see the only word from GW is in the Primaris FAQ where they state that Primaris don't replace regular marines...
If they were supposed to replace regular marines why not just release them as new models for Mk10 armour and change the unit statlines to coincide with the release of 8th edition? An awful lot of lore, new units and incompatible rules have been created to make them reinforcements and not replacements...

It's bound to happen. See the scale creep in other astartes that came out recently.
OP, just clarify it with your opponent and make sure the units can be easily identified. If you want expand your army and to mix them up with primaris rules, please paint the "true" primaris in a distinguishable way.
Generic characters disappearing? Elite units of your army losing options and customizations? No longer finding that motivation to convert?

Go nuts, I true-scale every single marine I make, following the instructions in veteransergeant's blog. They look just a tiny bit smaller than Primaris, who are bulkier and still appropriately aesthetically different, (helmets, kneepads and bolt rifles etc). Highly recommended.

As soon as GW feel they can pull the rug under 30 years of playerbase building to save the pennies that not supporting old marines will bring, they will do it, period. They might have bedazzled people with their recent marketing nonsense, but that's all it is, marketing nonsense.

Funny, because anyone with 'the slightest shred of pattern recognition' would instantly reply the above is utter nonsense. Why are CSM with mark of nurgle/tzeenth still a thing two editions after TS/DG got new models? Why are CSM a thing, period, when their models are way older than SM, when according to you they should have been replaced with DV chosen-like models in 6th edition? Why GW didn't tell anyone to drop ork boys and replace them with AoS orruk models? Same deal, bigger, new ones. That was in 6th edition too, btw, boyz are somehow miraculously still a thing. Ditto for 3 chaos gods who got revamp so far, half of their daemon range was replaced with bigger stuff, half remained old, smaller models, despite ease of squatting them right there and then. Gee, maybe give even one example (without going to hilariously laughable sophistry of the kind you have in your sig, namely 'I'll twist it the way literally no one else does to fit my preconceived notions') that fits that supposed "pattern"?
