Hello Dakka Dakka! i've always come across the gallery section when painting in the past but now that I am actually playing (er...about to play), here I am in all my newby goodness.
Years ago I picked up the Dark Vengeance box set in an attempt to play but didn't really do anything with it. Now, I have most of the Dark Angels painted and a local Warhammer store to play. I have also been gifted with quite a few older space marine minis to help me build up my army.
They are all from the Horus Heresy boxed set (only the figures, none of the larger ones), half are painted just blue and the other half are just red. Being the painter that I am, I plan to repaint them ASAP.
Here is my conundrum...
1) If I re-paint these other minis in the color scheme of say...Ultramarines, does that mean I could not use them in a matched game with my Dark Angels army?
2) What CAN I do with these extra minis? I have quite a few..30 space marines with various weapons, 2 named characters (one has a mace) and a terminator squad (I think that's what they are) and I'm liking several different other space marine factions. I don't think I want to lock myself in with Dark Angels just because they are what I got from that boxed set.
3) The set has multiple duplicates of space marines with the same weapon. Could I take one of them, paint them to match my Dark Angels to help expand that army and paint the other to whatever other faction I choose?
4) My local game store says all I need are the free rules GW has available and a codex. I feel like if I bought the core rule book, many of my questions would be answered.
Thank you in advance for the help. I've been painting minis ( GW and otherwise) for a really long time, but trying to actually get into playing the game is proving a little complicated.

How (or if) your models are painted is almost completely irrelevant on the tabletop and totally irrelevant if you don't do tournaments.
Run the blue ones as Dark Angels successors. It might be harder to pass off the green ones as Ultramarine successors what with all the DA iconography on them and all, but is probably still doable.

You're a noob, and a noob that's smart enough to get starting models secondhand rather than going and spending hundreds of dollars on stuff you don't even know how to use yet. So this is good. Any decent player out there is going to give you a pass on some of those secondhand models until you can strip them and repaint them or replace them.

Find a unit they can serve as. Don't worry about your paint scheme and heraldry until you settle on a chapter you like. No one's going to judge you negatively- you're feeling the game out. I'd be more concerned if you showed up, never having played the game, with a massive amount of models that have been expertly painted and having no idea what you're doing. I'd wonder if someone swindled you.

Well, the first thing you need is the rules. You need to know where you're gonna go, because 'duplicates' of things are a real thing, you don't have just a wide variety of completely different guys with different gear.

Yep.
And if you want, get Index: Imperium 1. It's probably cheap, but has all the Space Marines. The book is outdated, but can give you an idea as to what you can use.

Paint them all to match your Dark angels later on, once you know the rules better you can replace or repaint as needed

Alright, here is my take away so far...
I should bring the minis as-is to the table as proxy's just to get a few games in and make sure I ACTUALLY like the game. And I can just use an Index for all my stats.
Then, once I'm comfortable with everything, choose a faction and go crazy with the painting?

Correct. People may raise an eyebrow, but not nearly as much as they would if you showed up with $500.00 of models painted for an Army that you quit playing a month later.

And for sake of clarity i would avoid same color scheme, different chapters or reverse. Makes it easiei. Especially that there#s no identical colour schemes with different rules. Those games i refuse as too much trouble than worth it.

And if they do, you probably should pack up and find someone new to play.
You're unlikely to have a good time playing against such a person, in my experience.

I think he's assuming that you were going to use mismatched colors and chapter tactics with no rhyme or reason. Like, having a big pile of dark green dudes on the table, but half of them are using Ravenguard tactics and the other half are using Space Wolf tactics.
As long as they're all 'the same' and discernible, should have no issues.

You have 2 units that are painted identically. One of them use dark angel rules, one of them use ultramarine rules. That is path to arguments(no the ultramarines were here and not there) and mistakes. If both players can't identify quick and easily what rules each unit is supposed to have...Well it leads to game that's more trouble than it's worth.
At least separate them by having different chapters have different base rim colours. Makes it easier and more fun for both players.
Same way though bit less confusing is having 2 different colour schemes but same rules. If you have just 1 chapter rules used that's okay but again if you have three colour schemes and 2 rules that is source for mistakes and arguments.
If army can't provide quick&easy visual method to identify what models use what rules I exercise my right of not playing the game. No rule whatsoever requires me to play game.
