I'm just curious. It doesn't have to be competitive just be able to hold its own. Anyway have any ideas on some of the least expensive 2000 point armies to start out with?

Kill Team - T'au Empire, Death Guard

Add a couple of armigers or a medium knight to this and you are done https://www.games-workshop.com/it-IT/Imperial%20Knight-Super-heavy-Detachment-2018

Alternatively start deathwatch with a couple of these https://www.games-workshop.com/it-IT/Start-Collecting-Deathwatch-2017 and then proceed as you like.

It makes for a cheap decent army, really fun but hard to master.

Knights & Custodes is a good read by Sol, strong and more then likely the cheapest. You can also do Renegade Knights... so don't think your limited to IoM stuff. Renegade Knights with Death Guard is a decent reflection... weaker, a bit edgy but better theme-a-tics(Plague Drones / Crawlers etc.)But more then likely its a combo of the two big Knights(Castellan / Valiant) with a smaller supporting army.

With the game in flux over the CP changes, I'd say you can't go wrong looking at a Primaris force from Dark Imperium, and Conquest.

If you can cheap and easy get the basic blocks, 2 HQ, 3 troops, Intercessors, a good support model in the banner waver, and a first rate Heavy Support choice for dirt cheap makes it a hard bargain to pass up.

Add in that you can use them so many ways, Wolves, BA, Ultras, Fists, Ravens, homebrew, Deathwatch... Its a lot of options that its hard to go wrong with.

My Smash Bros list has a couple expensive models, but otherwise doesn't cost much, and it can win tournaments:

Death Guard Battalion
1x Typhus (this was here because I haven't changed the list up, and is the prime candidate for making the list better)
1x Sorcerer
1x 11-man Cultists w/Autoguns
1x 10-man Cultists w/Autoguns
1x 17-man Poxwalkers

Thousand Sons Supreme Command
1x Magnus the Red
1x Ahriman
1x Daemon Prince of Tzeentch
1x Sorcerer

Nurgle Supreme Command
1x Mortarion
3x Poxbringers

It's very soupy, but the wide range of psychic powers and ability to spam smite by using non-Thousand Sons for the first smites, followed be T-Sons for the later smites (since they won't suffer the increased casting difficulty), gives this list a lot of staying power that it wouldn't seem to otherwise have. You use the Poxwalkers, Cultists, and Primarchs to absorb fire and make it very difficult to hit your characters while you get this going due to character targeting rules. If Poxwalkers aren't killed in one go, you can replenish their numbers by killing infantry, whether theirs, or your own Cultists. Meanwhile, have all the psykers buffing the Primarchs to make them "must deal with" targets. Use the Familiar stratagems to change up psychic powers as the game goes on as required. Enjoy!

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

Buy 3 Imperial Knight: Renegades sets for £90 each, sell the terrain off for £20 each and the extra Knight off for £50.

That's £160 for a full Imperial Knight list with all the options for weapons.

Ok so, when people say KNIGHTS and CUSTODES is the cheapest how do you mean? Custodes are literally like 60 bucks for 3-4 models and if you get Telemon (And you WANT Telemon) from forgeworld he alone is 120 bucks. How do you combine custodes + knights to equal inexpensive?

I am genuinely intrigued and tried not to sound like an ass typing that out. And also are Jetbikes good? I either hear no they suck build the terminators or yes they rock get 6 of them?

Custodes.

Buy regular marines and paint them silver/gold; should be lots of food deals since there’s lots of boxed sets

Edit: yes JetBikes/JetBike captains are op; but they’re more expensive. Just convert bikes of your own

I'd recommend GK sets, but yeah. A Marine is a Marine. The defining characteristic of Custodes is being gold, and Marines look close enough and are the right size, so just paint them gold.

I'd be careful about this. Custodes are actually not marines at all, either in the fluff or in the rules.

This is going to be seen as a proxy at best, and basically tokens at worst.

I'd look hard at Eldar. Waveserpents, fliers, and guardians are all good and cheap money wise.

Exactly.

You COULD just play using empty bases with CUSTODES written on them. Doesn't mean you should.

Generally people only like playing vs this sort of stuff if its really well done, not just similar looking models with a similar paint scheme slapped on.

Putting effort into converting a model is always assumed from me.
All I am saying is that it would take minimal effort to get GK models, paint them gold and red and for them to NOT look like Custodes. You can even glue their storm bolter to their Halberds to create the same weapon

As GK models are roughly half the cost of Custodes, yet the in-game points cost is higher, Bam! Cheap army

I don't think anyone could seriously look me in the eye and say that wouldn't work. They're Citadel models. The Imperial super humans in future armour. They have guns on their spears. They're Custodes.

Two boxes of the 5 man Custodes unit gets you 3 troops and an elite. Add 3 captains on bikes as HQs and you've got nearly a 1200 point battalion for $180 MSRP.

Two Renegades boxes will basically make you an army for $400.

Huh, how good would a Knight be in a custodes army them? I'm literally starting custodes as my FIRST EVER W40k army. Mainly because small number of units/semi easy paint job that if I take my time with will look AMAZING. If I can add a 2 foot tall golden fething robot to that list.....i will.

Purchase a couple DI or Dark Vengeance kits and create a custom paint scheme with silver shouldpads. Run them as Deathwatch for now and swap to a marine chapter of your choice as FAQs roll in. It's a good faction with a ton of flexibility and can dance around a lot of meta shifts.

I will say Ad Mech - as long as you abuse the start collecting box and avoid the chickens.

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

Ebay, 3rd party sites, people selling boxes in forums like these.

If you want' cheap avoid buying at retail.

I bought 400€ of New in box miniatures from a Uk user in dakkadakka for 120€.

Yeah but as a starting army?

When you first started building miniatures do you think your level of ability would have allowed you to convert an entire army like this to a reasonable standard? Definitely not me...

Its not a terrible idea, just bad advice in this context.

Knights and Custodes are pretty big points users so you'll struggle to field a army large eneugh with the two together, you CAN do it but you might sturggle with board control.

Let's look at points for a moment.. A Knight Warden costs ~400 points,
A patrol detachment of A captain, 3 guard and a Banner Carrier is another ~400 points. and you've only got 6 models on the battlefield at over 800 points. not saying "don't do this" but be aware that you're going to have a pretty small army size wise and that can sometimes make things difficult.

You might, if you like Knights want to consider running a pure Imperial Knight army, that or if you want a "big stompy robot in gold" consider a contemptor dreadnought, kinda small in comparison but it's part of the custodes army list.

ohh regarding custodes paint jobs, they are easy to do something simple with, but you'll have so few minis I'd reccomend really going all out on each one. when I started my Custodes I found Duncan's video was a useful font of info

About $70 per big Knight on eBay from Renegade. $75 for a box of little Knights. No need for a codex purchase. Just need to find the spare Gatling Cannons.

$285 (pay tax only on the $75 box).

It's definitely not the super best but I bet it wins games.

Lol look up Telemon Heavy Dreadnought from Forgeworld - pricey, but he can bring down a titan on a good roll. I just wish he was bigger :( lol. I'm REALLY going for flashy value. Golden Banana boys + few units, if I win a game, they'll know who beat em lol.

Any army that has low model count but expensive points-wise models.

Custodes
Harlequins
Imperial Knights
Death Guard
Thousand Sons
Death Watch

Of all of these, Death Guard is probably the most fault tolerant, while Harlequins is the least fault tolerant. Imperial Knights struggle to capture objectives and can be un-fun for opponents that aren't prepared for 3-4 huge war machines.
