Subject: Looking for Death Guard cultists

Ork Admiral Kroozin Da Kosmos on Da Hulk
|
Hey everyone,
I'm looking forward to adding some cultists to my Death Guard collection and I'm not a huge fan of GW's models.
The optics I'm looking for could be world-war style soldiers with gas masks (Steel Legion models would be fitting, but hard to come by), some guys holding scythes or other humans that match the toxic warfare style of death guard, rather than the bile and filth style of nurgle daemons.
Also, since I plan on getting 40, I don't want to be spending 30€+ on a unit of five, sadly hobby money is finite.
So, does anyone know some third party models that could roughly match what I'm looking for?

Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.

There are these from shieldwolf miniatures ( http://www.shieldwolfminiatures.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=13), holding scythes.
Not prettiest models in world but I think they would look good.

How ragtag do you want them to be exactly? As old Neo Soviet stuff and Junkers from Vor and Void respectively fit the bill relatively nicely.
All of mine are made from a bits box dive with bodies from Flagellants, the aforementioned Junkers, Plague Monks, various models I had wearing trenchcoats and a smattering of Mantic zombie heads.

My bits box is mostly made up of a decade of ork units and armor plates/weapons looted from other armies, little to make anything looking human out of it.
In general I haven't decided how exactly I want my cultists to look, but soldiers from either world war with gas masks would work fine. Since Death Guard tends to plague bomb their enemies before advancing in the toxic mists, any cultists would either have to have protective gear or be complete lunatics.
I have thought about using either the Orlock or Goliath gangs from necromunda, but the former is to clean and high-tech-y, while the later are too brutish and bulky to be followers of nurgle.
As I have zero talent in regard to modeling anything out of green stuff, just buying some models and "nurgling" them up is not an option.

I know it's lacking in the scythe department, but for basic autogun cultists the Tox Troopers from Anvil Industries could work maybe?

Though a unit of 40 would end up being £80 so there's that.

Frostgrave cultists would be pretty sweet for a Deathguard army as well. Reasonably cheap as well, have to get guns separately though.

Too little death guard for my taste. IMO they would make perfect Word Bearer cultists, but not what I'm looking for. Automatically Appended Next Post:
I like those, the weird helmet kind of looks like the front of a bloat drone or blight hauler. 80 for 40 is still ok in my book, if I were to get actual steel legion minis I would probably paying twice that. Cool miniatures, but pretty much locked into the fantasy setting. I'd rather not convert 40 miniatures that have no other purpose but getting killed.

Anvil industry, trenchfighter regiments range add greenstuff and some Bits and pieces and your good to go.
You can btw use Ork Bits to make decent Mutants, get your hand on some regular humies and some daemons /other chaosy Bits and some tyranid bits especially for tentacles and combine that.
Edit: their regiment range is basically IG size so fits perfectly and you can mix as you like. I use them atm mostly for my r&h army but i could send you a link of some pictures if I am done with them.

You could always do historicals in plastics.
Warlord games winter outfits for most armies look good for krieg or steel legion.
then you spice it up a bit with bits like gas masks and icons to make them look like cultists.

I've already had a look anvil industry's stuff, the models are awesome and I could pretty much build exactly what I'm envisioning.
But it's just too expensive, for 130+ GBP I could get fully painted GW models.
I also don't want my cultists to be heavily mutated, since they need to be distinguishable from pox walkers and plague bearers. Automatically Appended Next Post: Desubot wrote:You could always do historicals in plastics.

Have you looked at the custom platoon/ squad builder?
Because if you use that you end up with 131.58 euro compared to steel legion from GW and a cadian command squad for 142.38 euro when you go for a full 45 man platoon.
in both cases you get 45 models so eh.
If you however only want infantry squads, which would be a good idea, you could use said squad builder for 40 models even with the correct specialist weapons (mg 42 for a heavy stubber) for 126.68€ which you would not get with steel legion squads from which you would have to get rid of 2 models each squad nearly because you don't need that many leaders.
What technically is an option: you'd order the helmet's with the gasmasks seperatly that would only cost you 17.09 + shipping since free shiping is after 45 Euros and they fit on regular IG models of all kinds.
For bodies then you could use GSC Neophyte Hybrids, cadians, catachans,or GSC units.
Or you grab your dekade old bitzbox of Orkz and put them to use.
Grab 3 Boxes Neophyte hybrids 1 box Neophyte Hybrid Squads (the heads there and the small dagger etc are easy to manipulate) and then beginn fitting on some ork bitz aswell combine that with green stuff and some of the more exotic looking gsc neophytes for some easy to build mutants which you then could run as cultists.
Big shootas, as stubbers, ork arms formed with greenstuff for tentacles holding crude autoguns etc.

Thing is, cultists are a unit that I see as a necessary evil to play Death Guard under the current rules. If I could just play three units of plague marines without shooting myself in the foot gameplay-wise I would.
I neither want to invest a lot of time nor money in those models, since their main job is sitting on objectives and getting shot. If I was building an AM squad of veterans, a command squad or similar, I would be all for your suggestions.
Therefore I'm looking for "cheap" models (roughly 2€ per model) that match the DG theme better than GW's cultists.

I'll probably get a different head than the ones in the picture, and I think they'll work well. Cheap too.

I went a very cheap way, bought Frostgrave Cultists and then bought Cadian arms for them.
They fit together wonderfully. I made them for my Nurgle Renegades army, but use them as my DG Cultists as well.
You can make them even more "Nurgley" with the bits in the Frostgrave box, but I chose to keep them pretty standard.

Ha! I came here to post those for you
If you did them in hazard yellow cloth and metal armored plates they'd look great. Like hazmat troopers who succumed to the contagion they were supposed to be fighting against.
I've ordered from Ramshackle and can't recommend them highly enough. Fun sculpts, great prices and the owner is a pleasure to do business with.
Shoot him an email with your wants and he'll walk you through your options. Great operation.
