So had my first read if the rules, it was a very brief one but I was still unsure as what the rules were with melee weapons.

In the data sheets it will say that a weapon has D - D3 for instance. Does that mean that the character with said weapon can only attack with that weapon D3 times, and his main profile attacks are using his strength etc. Or do you get those D3 attacks added onto the characters main profile attacks. Maybe a dumb question but thought id query with the experts.

Damage has nothing to do with number of attacks, but rather the damaged inflicted after hits, wounds, and saves but before FnP like saves

Oh so D is damage, meaning wounds? Interesting.

Yes, its a single attack that deals multiple damage capable of reducing multiple wounds on a single failed save throw.

Sadly GW have overloaded the word "Wound".

A damage of D3 means that for every wound you inflict that is unsaved, it deals D3 damage. Each point of damage lowers the targets remaining wounds by 1. So for example if you make 4 attacks with a Damage: D3 weapon, hit with 3, wound with 2, and then the opponent fails two saves, you inflict 2D3 damage. Lets say you roll a 3 and a 1, that's 4 points of damage, which causes the target to lose 4 wounds.

Because this is another facet of damage and inflicting wounds that is easily misunderstood I'll also add this:

If a model has an ability that allows them to make a roll to ignore wounds (such as Disgustingly Resilient on Death Guard models), you first work out how much damage the attack is inflicting, then you make the roll to ignore for each wound.

So an attack might do D3 damage. You roll 3 so the target is taking 3 wounds. They have Disgustingly Resilient and so roll 3 times, and for each roll of 5+ they ignore one of those wounds.

Wound is both:
An attack that hits and then passes the toughness check (which then becomes a wound that is either saved, or unsaved)
Or:
a model's hit points / health.

They should have called a model's 'wound' total either 'health' or 'HP' instead to make it less confusing.

Massive help guys, I must've overlooked the part about damage. But that has cleared this issue up. We are having our first game on new table etc next weekend, which will be full of rule errors etc.

I'll be back with more questions I am sure!
