Subject: Space Marine scout snipers - mortal wounds after/before normal wounds?
|
 |
Space Marine Scout with Sniper Rifle
Finland
|
example situation: Space marine scout snipers shoot Custodes squad, which has 1 guy with 3++ shield (he only has 1 wound remaining) and 2 guys without shields.
Scout snipers roll to wound: 6, 5 and 5 so three normal wounds and 1 mortal wound. Can the shooting unit decide if the mortal wounds are inflicted first or the normal saving throws?
Thanks all ready

After you roll to wound, the controlling player gets to allocate where the wounds go and thus who gets (or doesn't get) saves. So in your example, the Custodes player could choose to roll the saves 1 at a time on the 3++ shield guy before allocating the MW -

If a model in a unit has already lost wounds, any wounds that come later must be allocated to that wounded model. The player who owns the models that get wounded allocates the wounds how he wishes. He can kill the 1 wound model with the MW first, if he wants to.

Thanks for the answers.
Just to make this clear for myself. When attacker is inflicting mortal wounds and normal wounds, the defender can choose the order of taking the normal or mortal wounds.

Neither of you is correct:
Rulebook FAQ page 7
Q: If a weapon such as a rail rifle has an ability that can inflict a mortal wound on the target in addition to the normal damage, but the ‘normal damage’ is subsequently saved, does the target still suffer the mortal wound?
A: Yes. Note that if the ‘normal damage’ was not saved, the wound would be allocated on the target unit first (and any resulting damage inflicted) before the mortal wound was inflicted.
MW are dealt with after regular damage.

I was actually going to mention that, but I didn't know the wording on SM snipers. Eldar Rangers snipers are the same in that they do the MW after normal damage is resolved.
But the controlling player still gets to choose where the saves go first.
In the OPs scenario, the owner player has to take saves on the wounded model first because its wounded, but gets to choose which model after that to take further saves and then the MW

Remember the rules are written assuming you process shots one at a time.
So the player can take one save, then resolve damage and the MW, then the attacking player can make their next to hit roll. So you can’t sit it out and decide what order to process the saves in, as you won’t know in advance what needs to be allocated.

Remember there is a fast dice rolling rule. So yes, you can sit it out.

Aye true, fair dos, the Damage stat is the same and Fast Rolling doesn’t mention special effects as a differentiator, my bad. That was my original rationale for saying Fast Rolling wasn’t an option. But anyway, you can’t allocate the MW until you’ve allocated the associated regular wound.

Remember there is a fast dice rolling rule. So yes, you can sit it out. RAW, only to hit rolls can be fast rolled.

Then in resume. Those 3 wound must be first saved and in fall of not saving one it must be allocated to the model who was saving, model decided by the player who saves. After this, the mortal wound must be allocated to the wounded model.
We have also the fast rolling, that can be done for the hits and the wounds in fall of same S and T, but not for saves. Saves must be done one by one.
Anything more?

Incorrect. Fast Dice Rolling tells you to roll both Hit and Wound rolls together for all attacks with the same BS or WS along with Strength, AP, and Damage Characteristics attacking the same unit. You then go to individual rolls for Save and Damage.
