Am thinking of starting an Black Legion army with the blackstone fortress models as a base to build up from. My question is would or should I buy the Chaos codex or will a new black legion one come out you think?

Unlikely a Black Legion codex is coming. They’re the vanilla CSM to the Imperials Ultramarines.

Also, Blackstone fortress is likely to have only a few monopose dudes.

Id say wait a few days, there seems to be incoming news about chaos.

Yeah, Blackstone Fortress looks like it'll be based around the idea of a Chaos traitor legion or a renegades and heretics faction more than a proper CSM army --- though the Lord is an excellent looking figure.

They have said that Blackstone Fortress will be like Deathwatch Overkill, expect multipart plastic kits for some of the models featured here.

I think the ones with more chance are new Chaos Space Marines and new Chaos Cultists.

Blackstone Fortress is also coming out next year. Build your army, and then get the chaos lord, marines and cultists from the box if you want the neat poses and cool models.

If you want to start black legion, i'd say these 3 purchases are the most important for starting out.

1. Abbadon. The bread and butter for the Black Legion, and one of the most powerful units in the book.

2. Start collecting CSM. Sure, nothing in the box is particularly meta, but basic marines are a good starting point before cultists, helbrutes are pretty decent and a super vesastile kit, and the Sorcerer in Termie armor is pretty rad.

3. Cultists. You don't have to go out and buy 80 of them, but a simple block of 20 can be split into 10 for a battalion with your termie sorcerer and abbadon, and they are fantastic chaff.

I'd consider holding off on Abaddon - he's been rumoured to be getting a new model (and if anything, kit-bash the lord from Blackstone Fortress for a better looking one...

Eh, Abby isnt that expensive, and he won't be coming out with a new model this year, rest assured.

The rumor indicated Abaddon would be coming out in December, which means that the rumor is false, or possibly a misunderstanding of the Black Legion involvement in Blackstone Fortress.

Even if I knew that the Despoiler wasn't being re-released for ten years, I wouldn't buy the current monstrosity. It's old enough to legally buy alcohol in the States.

Yea Abby's model looks terrible. I'd say either convert your own from scratch or use the FW one.

As someone who attempted to restart their Black Legion army when the 6th edition book dropped, right off the heels of Dark Vengeance, I will advise against this.

The models are dated, very dated. Getting 3 new mini's isn't going to change that. The whole line needs to be revamped. For all we know Chaos will get their own Primaris models and squat marines will become obsolete, just like Imperial Space Marines.

We also don't know what the rules will be like, they could be a complete gak show, just like it was for the last 10+ years.

Don't jump the gun here. Wait for the new releases.

Indeed, the scale is way off by today's standards. A Primaris marine is a full head taller than the current model.

I've bookmarked a Black Legion army since Dark Vengeance was released, which I will start when they release a new Abbadon with new marines. Any day now!

'Someone who does something interesting' told me Blackstone Fortress is as close as GW is coming to a Black Legion Supplement for 8th edition.

He said Black Legion is supposed to be 'the be-all, catch-all of Chaos Legions,' and I took that to be one of those throw away comments about how any CSM unit can serve in the Black Legion.

Now that I've seen the contents of BSF, I think he was referring to datasheets for Traitor Guard and Gorherds. And I think he was suggesting there are better rules for these units than you get with FW's R&H list.

Personally, I feel the need to get 100x of those Traitor Guardsmen. It almost doesn't matter what their rules look like as long as they are better than R&H. I would have to see the rules for the Khornigors, but I really like the models and could see myself loading up on them.

I would hold off on buying a new Abaddon model (which is coming) but you can get one cheap on eBay if you want to get started. I don't plan on replacing my original Abaddon model anytime soon.

I've seen lots of dudes just kitbash their own Abbadon. That's what I'd do.

Start with a forge world justaerin. It's easy
