We had a foatid bloat drone on a ruins, 6" above the table top, 8" away (purely horizontal) was a nurgling minding its own business. A straight line from any part of the drone to any part of the nurgling didn't touch. Do models have cylinders that I need to be aware of? Techically if the nurglings were a little taller... then maybe they'd have been withing 9" of the drone. As far as I know, we can measure from gun tip, body part or base to any part of the target unit (opposing gun tip, body part or base), but none of this imaginary cylinder ??

And controlling an objective, is it 3" from the center of the objective to any part of your model or just withing 3" of the objective.

Thanks and please let me know

All ranges are measured Base to Base (replacing base with Hull if you don't have a base). Models on bases do not use any part of the model to measure range. The nurgling being "taller" in this instance would have done nothing because you ignore the model (when it has a base) for any and all range measuring purposes.

You always measure range to the centre of objective markers (for obvious reasons), so some point of a models base must be within the 3" sphere created in order to be within 3" of the objective. Objectives don't form "cylinders". This is confirmed by the BRB FAQ.

@Sazzlefrats

I back BCB's citations, but seeing as you're a San Jose player, be aware, that most players in the California meta secure an objective from its edge, even though the 8e rule says center.

At SoCal Open, I had 2 games go one way (center) and 4 the other (edge). Just be sure you both agree on how you're measuring.

Given that all the objective markers I have seen for years are 'casino chip' size (also 32 mm), the 'edge' use is an easy default.

Now, cue up Judas Priests' "Breakin' the Law!" and be a rebel like the rest of us west-coasters.

Yeah we also play to edge when using larger, decorative markers as it’s easier. Beauty of the mutability of the rules should two players so agree.

For me, the joy is in putting some good-looking models on the board and playing out a fantasy battle - not arguing over the poorly-made rules of some 3rd party who neither has any power over my play nor will be visiting me (and my opponent) to ensure we are "playing by the rules"
