Subject: Woodland Scenics Soft Flake Snow and Water Effect
I edited some into my post while you are replying. Not quick to post links in my tablet. My early work used GW flock from their basing kit, but anything in the last couple years is woodlands. Tons of examples in my blog and gallery.

No probs. Thank you very much for the reply! It really looks great. The container is quite big so I guess that will last years ;P
Automatically Appended Next Post: One more question, connected to the first one.
Anyone used the Woodland Scenics Water Effect? It says it is very easy to apply, you can even model it before drying?
Can you mix it though with some paint to create different colour water?
I know when I was doing research into snow bases, it showed up a few times. Mix it with the soft flake and you get a slushy, half-melted look. Nice if you are going for a half mud/half snow war-torn battlefield.
I can’t imagine it’s that hard to work with. Might be worth checking out youtube for some tutorials is nobody chimes in with personal experience.

Well it is quite expensive so I guess this stuff must be easy to use and very efficient (I hope at lest) I was hoping to create a sort of muddy/swampy effect so if it mixes with some dark colours it would be perfect.

I have used the water effects and soft flake snow together. Yo can vary the ratio to get a slushy or powdery effect. For really powdery you can sprinkle the snow over the top when you have applied the paste. I mix a little water in to loosen it up as well.
Very convenient but it is a bit of a luxury. Previously I used pva plus a little white paint and the snow. That works as well but not quite as realistic for me.
You can mix colours into it. I have tried it myself but I have put washed over the top to bring out a dirtier, slushier look.

Its the same as the GW snow flocking kit, its just a extremely short cut static grass in white. Looks okay if properly done, you need to break it up with medium slates and dry tundra bushes, if you applied it over a flat base it will look unnatural.

They are not the same. I just checked the remnants of my GW flock, and you are correct that is is a very short, very fine grain static grass. The Woodlands is more of a grainy powder. Different consistency and texture.

Which looks better right? I would rather have a small balls as snow rather than tiny white straws or so.
So the Woodland Water is a paste which you apply and spread over the desired area right? If you do not add any colour to it it will settle and become just transparent yes?
And then for example if I wanted some snow over it it is the matter of sprinkling it before it settles yes?

Well clearly Woodland effect is better and more realistic.
Can I ask how strong and durable it is? I mean does it stay in place and does not 'peel off' with just a brush or during transport?

I think of all the bases I’ve done, I’ve only had one time it peeled up a bit, and that was on one of my dreads. I think the PVA shrunk a bit while drying, and it lifted up a bit on one edge. I just filled the gap with some more flock, and if you didn’t know to look would probably not notice. This was with GW flock, but I suspect it’s the glues fault, or mine for having the mix wrong.
I’ve not had any problems with wear. There are a few specks of flock that come off whenever they travel, but I don’t put a sealant layer of glue or anything down as a final step, so it’s not surprising.
Full disclosure: I’m very careful with my models, have only been basing them for the last few years, and they mostly stay on the shelf. If you travel a lot, toss them in a shoebox, and game twice a week, YMMV.

Make a paste with watered down pva and add the soda, looks much better than snow flock.
Yeah I have heard about baking soda but never tried it myself and I am not sure it has a realistic finish.
I did already order the Woodland Snow Flake but for future reference it could be an option.
I do remember reading some years back about making water effect also but I lost the formula. I think it was also PVA based.

Yes.
Woodland Scenics Realistic Water and their Soft Flake Snow make, by far, the most realistic snow for miniatures. Realistic water is runny; it's like two part epoxy before it dries (it's not though). To use it to make snow, mix it with the Soft Flake Snow in whatever ratio you want. More snow, less water gives you fluffy, powdery snow. More water, less snow gives you wet, heavy snow.
Watch this:

If you're looking for some really realistic snow effects I can only recommend Precision Ice and Snow. The stuff they make is awesome.
Here's one of my boards on which I used it:
Based an entire army with the stuff, but for some reason I can't find any close-up pics apart from this one. The snow fall which can be simulated is awesome.
