I think GW need to released 'all' the rules in chapter approved. As someone who rarely plays the game I feel lost when it comes to the rules when they're are so many FAQ's and updates, its especially annoying when you have rules or amendments in books and on the internet, makes it annoying to play. I'd like it if even if they just re-released the rules ever 6 months or year in a new book that have everything you need in one book, I wouldn't even care about buying a new rule book every now and then, they could easily make a ebook, doesn't have to be fancy, anyone else in the same boat? Codex's are fine as they are with their updates though, isn't hard to memorise those.

GW will never do that because they like making money selling codexes, but it would be a very good PR move for them to release a book with the condensed rules, rules corrections, and all the points/datacards/etc in the same place.

I don't know anyone playing this game who doesn't rely on BattleScribe just to make building an army something less than excruciating, that's just bad business on GW's part.

Better to update more frequently than to have to wait (in the past maybe 10 years?) for a new army book.

I generally like the concept of CA updates - it means, in theory, that they're always trying to re-balance the game with little tweaks.

Sometimes, those tweaks seem schizophrenic, like cultists now being more expensive than guardsmen while being objectively worse, but eh. But the core concept is still good.

And like Insectum7 said, it's nice to not have to wait 5+ years to get rules updates.

I do not like the fact that rules are in multiple places for your army. If units that were modified in 2017 that didn't get a change in 2018 are still using the 2017 rules, that means in order to have a complete ruleset for your army you would need your base codex, CA 2017, CA 2018, and any applicable Index.

At this point I'm just going to trust Battlescribe to get all my points values correct.

I wasn't saying that the codex'es should be included, the FAQ's for them are fine.

My point was to make new rule books more frequently, I mean they could easily do it, the amount of money they make from unnecessary items like faction dice. People would buy the updated rulebook, even if they just made an electronic one using the same pics and lore etc. wouldn't be expensive to make at all.

Same I do. In points they are mostly correct and actualized. I know they want to sell more and more, bud at least rules and points should be via ebook, complete and actualized.

I'm not saying getting rid of the updates, they could continue to update constantly, just once in a while compile all the current updates into a rulebook once in a while.

Again codex's are fine as they are with their FAQ's, its just the updates for core rules.

I'm being cynical here, but I think if we make enough noise they will come up with "General's Handbook - Warhammer 40k' edition in addition to all the other publications in existence now which would have all the point costs for everything. But then the cynic in me whispers they would surely manage to make this publication not good as stand-alone.

Seriously, looking at the AoS, that system there looks infinitely better than what 40k has now. Yearly GHB which prints out all the current point costs etc.

If codex are disregarded, you "just" need your rulebook, the rulebook's faq and CA 2018 (or rather the latest CA) or am I missing something ?

Add the big faq between CAs if you want to be up to date though. But I don't feel like it's a ton of stuff. An updated rulebook once in a while would be nice though as beginners wouldn't have to go through other documents and those that would like to update could.

If you get a PDF copy of a codex, they're quite often updated with each FAQ. It's a shame it's nowhere near as satisfying as having a physical copy, but it's nice to have all the info in 1 place

My 'soup' requires eight books to put on the table. Next week it'll be nine. Seven of those books have FAQs and Erratas.

It is getting increasingly ridiculous, but GW makes money that way so nothing will change.

If anything, it'll get worse with more books.

Obviously, this is the punishment for running soup. Why else would you not run it?

That's not correct, all unit changes from CA 2017 have been reprinted in the 2018 version.

My main army, with a single book, costs 3 times a tipycal SM or chaos army unless scratch built models are allowed. You don't need 9 books to play chaos or imperium and no one forces you to play a soup.

Why don't you just photocopy the pages you need and have a folder for them?

It's not an issue of the physical books, 'cause I don't use them, it's just tiring to have to reference so many books to make my minis usable.

My 'soup' is only three Factions, but needs eight books. Regardless of workarounds, that's not a satisfactory state of affairs.

You have a question about using a Stratagem on Zarakynel? Ok, here, reference the entry in Codex: Daemons, then this one in Index: Forces of Chaos, then this FAQ entry, then I: FoC again. Clear?

You think I've priced my tanks incorrectly and you're not even sure Renegades can take that unit? Ok, cool, well here's Index: Forces of the Astra Militarum, here's two FAQs, here's Codex: Astra Militarum and here's Chapter Approved. Off you go.

It's madness.

It’s the “golden age” of 40k. I read that on the fecebook. Deal with it.

I guess it's actually four Factions, with the Renegade Knight.
