Hi

Ive used the gold GW spray and one of my models is a bit grainy looking so am going to have to strip him down.

Is methylated spirits any good?

How long do I need to keep the model in there it’s a custodian guard so it’s not massive.

Also I’ve been spraying them one by one should I do them in groups because I think this grainy effect happened because I forgot to shake the can in between sprays the rest of the army is great smooth and shiny

Go to the shop and buy a bottle of brown dettol, some nail varnish remover and a toothbrush. Leave it in the dettol for a few hours, remove, then use the nvr and toothbrush to remove the resulting gunk.

This may not end well... many nail polish removers (even some non-acetone solutions) will melt plastic miniatures. If you're going down this road, do a test on a scrap piece of plastic first, and if you find one that works, stick with that brand.

Metholated spirits will probably work. Just submerge and give it a test scrub with a toothbrush after about 15 minutes. If no luck then give it another 15 mins and so on. Keep an eye on though. Once the paint starts coming off then remove as much as possible out of the spirits and then resubmerge and scrub (to keep your meths fairly clean and thus reusable for longer)

I've found that on modern plastic minis the nvr has no effect. To be fair I'm only using it to brush the dettol off, then wash under running water

Depends on the nail varnish remover, lots of time it is iso, sometimes it is acetone.

For a Brit, just get some wilkos paint and varnish stripper - it is benzyl alcohol and will rip it off safely and quickly. Also has the added advantage of not smelling like satan's gooch like dettol does.

Make sure it is running water. Having a jar of water to swill in just makes a lumpy mess of paint.

Personally I've found that after dunking a model in dettol, I just use a fresh bit of dettol to help scrub and wash off the first layer. Basically once you're dealing with neat dettol and not dettol mixed with paint you can then wash the dettol off with warm flowing water without issue. Don't use water first as it will become a gooy mess very fast as the paint causes issues.

That said I've only paint stripped with metal, where you can basically leave it in a jar of dettol for weeks/months/years and not have any issues. Plastics and resins can be different.

Its just the nail varnish remover that the water is removing. the NVR has already removed the dettol residue. I've done many plastic models this way. you cant leave them in for days like metal but a couple of hours is all you need.
