Just an idea wondering if it is legit.

Can you simply deploy a drop pod like a normal model e.g. a rhino with all the guys inside then decide to get them out at any turn you like? say turn 3...

Idea might be owing to the board setup or mission it might be more prudent to stick one on a home obj with guys inside somewhat safe from an opponents first turn then have them jump out in your turn or maybe stay in for when they are needed.

Yes, you are allowed to deploy it like a normal unit. The rule says 'may' so deploying from orbit is optional.

You'd probably be better off taking a Bastion or some other fortification instead though!

If it's purely for a narrative scenario, just talk to the opponent. Maybe the pod should be free as part of that.

The Drop Pod’s rules say you “can” start them off-board, so by this you could start on the board if you wish.

Thought as much, its my stern guard and captain i use in one... just never struck me to do this as it might come in handy in specific situations.

Another idea was it might come in handy for blocking off roads, providing some LoS blocking ... again also very situational cases.

Is there any rulings on LoS blocking with one? cant find anything... i'd be inclined to never open the fins.

True LOS is True LOS. You can draw LOS through an Empty Drop Pod just fine, and if the fins are closed you can't.

However, nice idea on keeping them inside.

Models block line of site yes, so a drop pod would block LoS for models on the other side of it.

Models block if you can't see through. But you can draw los say through the gap under rhino. Pod modelled open doesn't block los all that much

There are no rules for how to deal with moving parts on models. So you can do what you want with the fins.

A reasonable approach would be to only move movable parts during the movement phase or other actions that allow movement, but that isn't explicitly a rule - just my interpretation that moving a part of the model is moving the model.

It can fire yes, you draw line of sight from any point on the shooting model.

Never any official clarification. For tournaments as always it should be down to the organisers and I would hope they wouldn't allow it. For other games, just don't... Please

It's really simple. If you do it in a tournament you'll get a referee called on you and no sane TO will allow it. Outside tournaments it's gonna get you blacklisted. Maybe not by the store, but definitely by individual players.
