So I recently took my army up to 800 points for my local club's gaming night. I'd still not finished painting my new units and I'd only played once when the CA 2018 points changes hit, and what was an 800 point list became a 700 point list! The plan now is to turn this patrol detachment into a battalion detachment by splitting the existing TAC squad in half and adding a third 5-man TAC squad.

++ Patrol Detachment (Imperium - Space Marines) [39 PL, 696pts] ++

+ No Force Org Slot +

**Chapter Selection**: Ultramarines

+ HQ +

Captain in Terminator Armor [7 PL, 101pts]: Iron Resolve, Power sword, Storm bolter, The Sanctic Halo, Warlord

Lieutenants [4 PL, 70pts]
. Lieutenant: Lightning Claw, Storm bolter

+ Troops +

Tactical Squad [9 PL, 188pts]
. 7x Space Marine
. Space Marine Sergeant: Combi-melta, Power fist
. Space Marine w/Heavy Weapon: Missile launcher
. Space Marine w/Special Weapon: Meltagun

+ Elites +

Venerable Dreadnought [8 PL, 152pts]: Twin lascannon
. Dreadnought combat weapon w/Storm Bolter: Storm bolter

+ Fast Attack +

Land Speeders [6 PL, 98pts]
. Land Speeder: Heavy bolter, Typhoon missile launcher

+ Heavy Support +

Whirlwind [5 PL, 87pts]: Storm bolter, Whirlwind castellan launcher

++ Total: [39 PL, 696pts] ++

So I guess I need two more sergeants, two bolter marines and either a heavy or special weapon marine. As I'm fully WYSIWYG I guess the exact loadouts will be dependent on the models.

Any suggestions on the best way to get hold of sprues for the above?

Where do you plan on going from here?

If you just need 5 guys in power armor, picking up a tac box is probably the best way to go. Grab the normal 10 man one, you can find a use for the extra guys later. Making two sarges should not be hard to do. If you want to go the extra mile, get the UM upgrade sprue to help fancy one up.

It used to be that you couldn’t swing a dead tyranid without hitting a bundle box that came with spare tacs. Although these days there is more primaris out there filling them up. It might be worth a trip to the FLGS to see if they have any old things on the shelf.

If you want to field more dreads, it could be worth grabbing another start collecting box. You might not want another TDA captain, but he’s basically free in there, and you might be able to trade him to a fellow for something else.

Other thoughts would be to pick up a 10 man tac box and a 5 man sternguard box. You could stretch out the SG box with extra tac parts, and use some of the vet bits to spice up your tac sarges. By doing them at the same time you get to spread the spare bits around now.

If you really like the look, the Heresy range of marines are sold for a bit more. If you can find the big boxes, they are great values, but you need to drop a large chunk of change.

Rather then more tacs, have you thought about some scouts? It can be nice to mix things up a bit, both from a painting and tactical POV.

Good question. Fully painted WYSIWYG 800 points is really the target. That will fit with my local club's gaming night and available space for storage at home.

Yeah I think the TAC box probably is best way forward. I have plenty of spares from the Space Marine Commander Box I used for my Lieutenant, so spicing up the sergeants shouldn't be a problem.

I've never been a fan of scouts - full power armour or nothing for me.

Looks like a well balanced TAC list.

The captains sword is impressive enough to be called a relic blade. It’s just a few points more than a regular power sword, but has much better stats. I might drop a fist from a tac sarge to free up the points. To be honest, even with the point drops I’ve not a huge fan of power fists on 2A sarges. Lot of points for not a lot of swings. I’d let that slide for the sons of Dorn, but we’re Ultramarines here; don’t need to go all fist, all the time. Basic power weapons are affordable and do a decent job. Especially for backfield camping squads, I’d not go big on CC toys for the sarge there.

There are a lot of little lateral shifts I’d make, but some of that is just personal preference. Looks like a fun time on the table.

The power fists are a retro throwback to my 1st edition sergeants. I hadn't actually considered the relic blade but it does look good - let me give that some thought

So very missile-focused now, but gives more range than melta and more flexibility in terms of frag/krak and castellan/vengeance (depending on opponent).

Hey Castor, nice to see you here again man!

I like the new list! It's maybe not as mobile as I'd personally be building for, but at 800pts this list should do work for you, and be fun to play

be cautious though friend, you've got a lot of points tied up in anti-tank/multi-wound weaponry that against armies with a lot of bodies (Guard, some Eldar, Nids, some Crons etc.) will feel wasted... D6 damage is useful but is utterly wasted on infantry outside of custodes and other muti-wound infantries. with that said, the heavy bolter, storm bolters, sheer volume of boltguns and the Whirlwind should deal with "horde" forces adequetly at this point level. loving the missile launcher theme. sorta ANGRYMARINES-esk.

Let us know how it runs?

Moving forward I can't reccomend a leviathan dreadnought enough. yes it's forgeworld, yes they're expensive, but pick up a bargain on Ebay and they're one of the most satisfying kits I've found to paint and play. so damn powerful. also consider if allowing yourself forgeworld access, your existing Dreadnought could play the role of Venerable Chaplain dreadnought; moving his 150-ish points to the hQ slot saving you some points on either capt or lieutenant. remember with wisdom of the ancients he can provide the re-roll 1's aura. you wouldn't need to stress about the Relic restriction on a levi either, as the whirlwind is also a heavy support choice. just a thought mate.

Thanks guys. I'm hoping to build/convert the additional miniatures I need for this list over the next week or so in time for the first WH40k club night of 2019 so I'll let you know how I get on.

I'm not sure I understand the comment about having points tied up in D6 damage weapons. Do you mean the dread? He's here to deal with tough individual targets. All the missile launchers can fire frag missiles against hoards and I'd take a castellan launcher instead of the vengeance launcher. The only reason the vengeance launcher is in the list is to give me the option (it's more points).

Yeah but apart from the twin lascannon they can all fire frag too.

In all my years playing, across every edition, I’ve had only not regretted shooting frag missiles once. And I put a lots of MLs on the table due to inertia and nostalgia.

I blame lack of coffee and posting from my phone.

Almost every time I shoot a frag it disappoints me. Once, I think back in 5th edition, I cought a blob of little nids in the open with a TML/HB speeder and totally ruined their little lives with a pair of frags. EVERY other time, even with hypothetical best case targets, they just fail to deliver. I see a blob of tightly packed soft targets and try. And if I’m lucky, one will die.

So I can’t say they always fail. I’ve got one example where they worked. But the vast majority of the time, I wished I’d just used the krack.

I have always the most ugly trows on the D6 for frag. After lots of time trying to use it I just simply don't try again. I just search for a big target for krak. It is just the D6

Right, so I've played 3 games with this list now, including 2 today with the new Bolter Discipline rules...

I lost against Orks a few weeks back, but I held out to the end and took down his warlord. I drew against Necrons and Tyranids today, again taking out both warlords and having more points left on the table in the game against the Tyranids. Highlights were my Dreadnought totally owning a Carnifex in close combat, and taking out the Necron warlord with a lucky single shot from a missile launcher between two buildings

In all it seems a well-rounded list that's pretty well balanced against those factions. All of the units and loadouts seem useful, so I don't think I'll be changing anything for now.

Hey Castor good to see you back man!

With the new bolter discipline rules; can you see yourself fulling a battalion with the other tactical squads we've discussed previously? I'm personally in the midst of painting another 30 marines that I can't help but be excited for, should the beta rule become standard!

Particularly in these lower points games you're playing a lot of; the increased fire output from these squads is a welcome addition.

I really hope it does. It's a well needed buff and certainly not too OP. I guess it depends how many people complain to GW that their faction should also get it (which would totally defy the point of it as a buff to SM)...
