Thanks mate, the stippling worked pretty well on this guy, as did the green glow on his vision slit (painted it the same as the marines lenses.
ShadowsAndDust wrote:That Plague Burst Crawler looks amazing. Probably the best one of the whole army so far.

Thanks mate, hopefully they keep improving as I figure out what I’m doing!

Earlier today The Black Death Crusade undertook its first mission in The Cebriones Crusade (hosted by Cryptic Cabin, Bristol). They descended on Forge World WY-4TT a newly populated planet (Population Density 1) with a growing society (Fecundity 1) of hardy Mechanicum thralls (Vulnerability 1) making for a tough planet to begin concocting a Grand Plague. Never the less they intended to spread Papa Nurgles joy by making the Ad Mech force Unwitting Vectors (chance to increase Plagues Survival Rate with each surviving unit) and exhuming a Viral Harvest (chance to increase Plagues Adaptability when No Mans Land objectives are exhumed).

Carrion-Lord Dregnul deployed in Deep Strike with the Verrux the Weepings Deathshroud Terminators. He sent Gangrus’ Rotborn and Tharxus’ Filthreaver Plague Marines scouting forwards with an eye on the No Man’s Land objectives. The Ad Mech sent forward their Dunerider, Breachers, Servitors and Destroyers. The latter 3 opened fire, taking a couple of wound off Sludgehammer the Myphitic Blighthauler and slaying a Poxwalker who hadn’t hidden very well but the Rotborn shrugged off the fire sent their way. Gutrain and Sludgehowler whittled down the Breachers whilst Pustus (Malignant Plaguecaster) and Feculus (Tallyman) led Gangrus’ Rotborn Plague Marines forward to successfully exhume their first objective uncontested

In turn 2 the Dunerider surged forwards and deposited the Skitarii Vanguard and their Marshall. Their combined firepower put pay to many of the Plague Marines, but they held their ground. Belchmaw was wiped off the board by the Destroyers. The Ruststalkers then surged forward and charged Thraxus’ Filthreavers, both sides whittling each other down.

Dregnul and the Deathshroud teleported in to the Mechanicum rear flank and proceeded to delete Battleclade Servitors. Then with the Eye of the Swarm Stratagem he instructed Thraxus to blast the Ruststalkers at point blank range with all their ranges weaponry, this proved highly effective and they finished them off in the fight phase
Sludgehowler pressed forward to get a clean shot at the Skitarii Rangers taking many of them down. Gutrain and Pustus’ Focussed Plaguewind made mincemeat of the Skitarii Vanguard. But in turn 3 they took their Revenge, with the Dunecrawler tank shocking the remaining members of Gangrus’ Plague Marines and Feculus to death. Pustus tried retaliating but in the panic he missed the massive tank with his staff .

In turn 4 the Ad Mech threw nearly everything they had at Sludgehowler

Shooting had very little impact so they charged in from everywhere to get him off the Objective

And that eventually put pay to him.

The rest of Turn 4 made little difference and then we were out of time. At that point I was ahead by 1 VP so we quickly walked through Turn 5 and figured that we’d have drawn that

So The Black Death Crusade set off with a victory. They also successfully exhumed a Vector Target for the Viral Harvest Agenda, that got 1XP for Pustus. Quite a few Ad Mech were left alive, some of which were below half strength which was needed for my Unwitting Vectors Agenda. As the victor I got an extra Marked for Greatness as a victor Bonus, so I Marked Pustus and Sludgehowler given how effective they’d been.

Rolling for my Path of Contagion I improved the Survival Rate by 1 thanks to Unwitting Vectors. That bagged me another 3XP which I put on Pustus. Viral Harvest turned out to be a bust and made no difference. On step 3 I rolled a 4+ for Cultivation adding 1 to the Survival Rate. Step 4 Counteragents was a fail that meant the Vulnerability stayed at 1. Step 5 is Death Toll, and even with my new Survival Rate of 3 I rolled higher and killed off the small population of WY-4TT and causing my Plague to fail at the first opportunity. Following that failure The Black Death moved on to another planet, they’re yet to figure out its name but with a Population Density of 3 I should keep concocting for a few more games at least.

Now with 7 XP Pustus gained the rank of Blooded and since he covets Daemonhood he sought Papa Nurgles blessing. Papa gifted him the Boon of being Grossly Swollen (+2 wounds). Nobody else qualified for any gifts, so on to Out of Action checks. Most passed them, but Belchmaw and Thraxus’ Filthreavers failed theirs. Thraxus suffered Crippling Damage (-1” and unable to Advance) with Belchmaw getting Fatigued (-1OC and no Charge bonus).

Overall a really interesting experience. The mission had really low VP which kept things in the balance but the XP boost from Agendas instead of Secondaries gives quite a fluffy flavour to the game. So far, really enjoyable and I’m looking forward to the next game.

Given how poorly Thraxus performed I’m thinking of interring him in a dreadnought and letting him take out his failings in a more extreme way. I bought a really rough one recently that I think came from Dark Vengeance. It took a fair bit to get two really thick paint jobs off and even more work to get the pieces apart

I couldn’t quite get the Multi Melta apart so I need to figure out how I can close the massive gap.

Further down the line of the campaign I’m hoping to raise a character to Daemon Prince status so I built this guy up a while ago

He’s mostly stock, but has a bit of chainmail added to a shoulder pad and a small tentacle from his stomach, oh and a Nurgling to keep him company!

Bit of a long post this one, hope you all enjoyed it, because there’ll hopefully be more

Thanks for looking

I looked back over my eBay purchase history and found pics of the Helbrute in its ‘as received’ condition.

Whilst you can just about see the thick paint job, you can’t really see the one underneath it, nor all of the gaps in the model. The push fit pegs were in an awful state so I had to trim them off. Even then, it still wouldn’t go together particularly well and I had to scrape joints, file polycement welds and cut other bits. Disappointingly some of his chains it seems are missing as are a couple of blades from the power fist. Eventually though managed to get the Helbrute back together and in slightly better shape than he was before… then I nurgled him up a bit with a few boils and pock marks in his armour similar to the effect on the Plagueburst Crawler. It’s not that easy to see right now, but hopefully the rust effect will highlight it for me

I then hung out of the loft skylight and gave his face a quick little prime as I figured it would be nigh-impossible to paint with his sarcophagus in place. A couple of thin layers of Zandri dust in the area and a wash of Athonian Camoshade for his necrotic head was followed by a yellow speed paint on the gums around his little orifice.

Looking at his point he’s about the same as the extra Plague Marines that I’m also painting up so he might even jump them in the queue if I can get him based and the rest of him primed tomorrow.

As for his backstory, I’m thinking that Dregnul got fed up with Thraxus positioning his squad so poorly that he ordered him to be devoured/entombed within the Helbrute. That way his poor positioning matters less and he doesn’t get other Plague Marines killed! ?

Also I forgot pics, but Typhus and the other Plague Marines got their skin, cloth and bones basecoated as well.

Thanks for looking

So it seems the Helbrute really has jumped to the front of the queue! Over lunch I finished up his face and the inner mouth. Masking it off I primed the outer mouth and the bulk of his body

Luckily the mask worked well so I glued on the outer mouth and finished off the priming

I think he’s already looking pretty sick, and I’m looking forward to painting more of him. The big question though is how to paint his limbs. I had been thinking to go full pink, but that might be a bit much. Maybe some athonian camoshade like skin to match his head. The other option would be to use the same as the fleshy parts of the Myphitic Blighthaulers. Whatever one I pick, the pipework will be pink. What do you guys think?

Thanks muette, i was pleasantly surprised that his face came out looking pretty good hopefully the rest of him does too!

Did a bit more painting tonight, throwing some Ratling grime on Typhus and some Plague Marines, then doing the armour, trim and flesh of the Helbrute. I decided to go with a regular flesh tone to match his face, but decent coverage without brush strokes is going to take a few coats I reckon;

The boils I added to him seem to have worked quite well and the use of sprue goo to seat the half beads seems to have blended them in quite well. Similarly the holes drilled in to his armour plates don’t look too dissimilar to the ones from the Plagueburst Crawler. With any luck he’ll blend in nicely with the rest of the army.

Thanks for looking

PS pretty sure it’s not just me that thinking he looks quite like the latest Ghazkhull Thrakka model!
PPS I should be collecting the Death Guard Rhino panels tomorrow!

Well, I managed to pic up the Rhino bits from work and have made a good start on it. Which given my insanity means painting the interior and also involves a good bit of kitbashing

I’m particularly pleased how the maw and Nurgling turned out.

This side got a nice comfy back rest and I used sprue goo to try and create a drip from the ceiling

I’m not sure whether these are legit forgeworld or copies. They’re a bit on the small side and the sprue gates didn’t match some of the ones I’ve seen online, but they still look great so I’m happy either way!

Yesterday I took the Death Guard to a league game against Ragnars Space Wolves. Typhus and the Helbrute made an appearance to get me to 1500 points as did the Void Panthers Rhino

Typhus and the Poxwalkers proved highly effective on the central objective, taking down the Thunderwolf Cavalry

The plague marines didn’t do as well against the Invictor Warsuit, but the rhino managed to block the deep striking Ragnar Blackman and the unit of Head Takers he was with

The Plagueburst Crawler and one of the Blighthaulers got rid of the Valiant with a bit of help from a squad of plague marines making it afflicted in turn 2. Sadly the crawler bit the dust when the Wulfen made their 9” charge from deep strike

The other Blighthauler faced off with a Vindicator but both of them survived quite comfortably

So they both changed tack and switched targets. Typhus’ Poxwalkers bodyguard kept him safe all game, though I think I as doing their Feel No Pain rolls wrong, rolling them per attack not per damage. Will remember that for next time

Since I’m slow at writing these, another 2 days has passed and I made more progress on the latest bunch of reinforcements

All of the pink bits have been finished as have the bone elements. Next I’ll finish the fabric bits and then get my rust and verdigris on before the greens and finally the bases are done.

Thanks for looking

Thanks man, they really are quite manky. You’ll be pleased to see that the rhino Nurgling is also done
youwashock wrote:Typhus sure is a cool looking character. Nice work glowing up the Hellbrute. Great momentum, keep it up!

He’s really cool and really quite good in game, especially when surrounded by 20 Poxwalkers! The Hellbrute has been a great transformation

I’ve finished up the reinforcements for the Black Death Crusade army having stayed up way too late the other night! The Plague Marines should help me optimise my squads with more Heavy Plague Weapons and Plague Spewers/Blight Launchers or bulk out to full squads of 10.

I’ve not yet made good use of the Heavy Plague Weapons, I think they’ll need to ride in a Rhino to an objective then be cracked open and charge. Good job I’m working on a Rhino!

Overall, nothing special, but a solid unit that should bolster the army nicely.

The icon bearer will probably just join a squad of Plague Marines as an icon of despair carrier, much like the chap from Kill Team does. Not sure that he’ll get much table time, but I have the model for completeness I suppose

This next pic is probably his best angle. Honestly he’s a bit sloppy in places but he’s a Plague Marines so it’s just characterful right?

And a pic of the nurgling to finish off. This one is from the flail wielding Kill Team Operative. He seems to be having fun hanging on to the icon!

Having a second Plaguecaster should make my second squad of Plague Marines a bit punchier with his [Sustained Hits] rule.

I quite like the bit of drool on the corner of his mouth, it ties his green cloud to him nicely I feel.

Overall he turned out pretty well, maybe his guts could’ve had different colours, but he’s good enough for the table.
Next up is the Hellbrute. Another that turned out pretty well, particularly his face hole

So far he’s not proved that great in game, but he scared my last opponent who sent quite a lot of firepower after him.
Lastly here’s Typhus, standing on one of my dead Necrons

So far he’s proved pretty handy in the Poxwalkers squad in holding central objectives thanks to the scout 5” and basically getting 20 extra wounds that can do some decent fighting

His cloud of flies is really cool, but it’s do hard trying to spot what is a cloud and what is a fly!

All in a cool mini who took the paint scheme pretty well. I do wonder whether I should’ve done his helmet white like in the studio colours as he looks a bit dark. Maybe if I end up with another at some point I might go that way.

As usual here’s a pic of the whole gang to wrap up the post

They all have magnetised bases as I’ve invested in a couple of WarMag boxes and sheets. Gotta admit I’m quite impressed with them so far. Looking forward to getting them on the table now they’re fully painted.

I’ll make another post shortly with the Rhino internals

Thanks, it’s a good green, that vomit yellow from Vallejo is . I do have a few cultists from one of the job lots that I got to acquire the army. Sadly they’re not an option for Death Guard anymore so I’d have to use Legends rules or proxy them as Poxwalkers. I have thought about converting them by adding spikes and swapping heads/arms/legs etc I’m tempted to get a box of AoS Zombies and a Poxwalkers box and mash them altogether

As promised here’s some pics of the Rhino internals that i finished off last night.

I like how the nurglign is having a good time pulling out the rhino innard, hopefully it’s nothing too important

The roof ended up a bit blotchy, but that’s just Death Guard character and grime.

Recipe wise the Nurgling was base coated blue then highlighted up through purple to pink and finished with a pink white mix. The blacks were just black Templar over the bleached bone I used to base coat the whole interior. The walls were just washed with Agrax Earthshade. The greens were the usual emerald green, striking scorpion green and vomit yellow.

I’ve also now closed it up, though I have left the back hatch openable. I sunk a magnet in to the end of the door and the top of the opening. There’s also a hook on the door so I can open it easier to look at the Nurgling! Here’s the view

And a slightly different one so you can see the Nurgling better

Then from the outside I have glued on the side panel and boy do I hate the way they go on leaving horrible seams, even for death guard minis! Still, it’s better than the forgeworld bits which needed a lot of filler and the front piece was a bit uneven.

Hopefully a bit of sanding and filling will sort that out.

Thanks for looking

Love the in-depth battle report. Thanks for taking the time to take the photos and write it up! Crusade/RP heavy is the best way to play IMO.

Thanks tzurk, it’s a good feeling to be on a roll and I 100% agree that Crusade is the way to play! So much so that my Necrons are also getting in on the action. They’ve got a couple of minis to be painted and it would be good to get another 12 Warriors to round out the squads to a full 20 each.

Changing tack yet again I’ve made a start on some Blightlord Terminators. My FLGS is running a slow grow of 500pts per month for 4 months, so I figured that these guys were the most points I have in a single unit. I then have the choice of either a Rhino and Biologus Putrifier or 20 Poxwalkers. I’m leaning towards the latter as they’ll probably be quicker. For now though, here’s the Blightlords

At this stage they look a bit grey but they should revert to black when the Ratling Grime gets in on the action. I’ll do the Metallics next I think as that usually brings out the models. Some of these guys have a lot of fleshy bits so I’m looking forward to seeing how that develops. I could probably do with a couple more to round off a squad, so might have to look out on eBay to see if I can get a good deal there

Can't wait to see your take on these guys - they're certainly gnarly, imposing sculpts waiting to be grotted up.

Funny how 20 models can be less time consuming than 2!

My son's kindergarten created a little nature display that's up on display with a bunch of others in a local art supplies store, and when we went in to visit I realised it was also a FLGS - I bought some Vallejo paints while I was in and got to talking to the owner about how they run casual Tuesday nights and they're in the middle of a Crusade campaign and the next one should start in a few months and and and and...maybe one day life will slow down enough to get back into the playing side of things. For now I'm happy living vicariously through your blog.

Everything looks amazing. Love the battle report. I personally miss the whole 'hordes of chaos' style 40k. Every book is like "two million cultists and 5 khorne bezerkers that soak up artillery shells by themselves. They really should make a renegade guard style book, I know you can 'run them' as a mostly cultist style for regular chaos marines but....

Thanks Sarpedon, I’m on a roll at the moment and finding fun colour schemes is a big part of that. It’s always good to hear that others like them too.

Not had much hobby time with family and travelling for work, but I’ve managed to get some copper on the Blighlords

I also got a few more Necrons to round off some squads since they’re joining the crusade

But since most of the army is more modern than these guys I swapped their weapons for the new style

The Gauss Reapers were trickier than the Flayers but the poses worked surprisingly well. They’ve got a game at the weekend so I might get a pair of them done to complete a squad. We’ll see how motivated I am

Glad I induced a bit of nostalgia!

Made a bit of progress on the Necrons Warriors, here’s two Gauss Flayer wielding chaps

One of the Flayers had the green bit replaced with an Immortals Reaper barrel which worked surprisingly well. The other had the whole front bit replaced as I did on the original batch.

Tonight I’ve stayed up way too late to throw some contrast paint at them

I think I might have an outside chance of the flayers being finished ahead of my game on Sunday.

Some more Necron reinforcements arrived in the post this week as I won a cheap lot on eBay; less than £25 for 15 warriors, 2 plasmacytes, a Plasmancer, Royal Warden, 3 Skorpekh Destroyers and 2 Ophydian Destroyers. They were listed as spares/repairs but are mostly complete, just missing a chest for a warrior, an arm for an Ophydian and a Gauss Reaper for the Warden, all of which I think I should be able to source from my bits collection. With repairing my eBay haul and painting the warriors I’ve gotten a bit excited for the new Kill Team box too, hopefully I can secure one on Saturday. The Warriors resting in the alcoves look a bit cool I think!

A bit out of sync but on Wednesday the Black Death Crusade infected a new world but met a stern Imperial Guard Combined Arms Detachment rolling with 2 Dorns in a 1000 pt list! With their latest plague needing a boost to the Fecundity and Survival Rate I chose the Sow the Seeds of Corruption (sit on 3 vacant objectives) and Unwitting Vectors (surviving enemy spread the Virus), perfect for if you lose a game!

I went first and pretty much immediately made mistakes! Being scared of the Dorns I figured the Chimeras and the Sentinal wouldn’t pose much threat to Sludgehowler the Myphitic Blighthauler. How wrong was I! Those sustained hits on the Heavy Bolter and then a Hunter Killer Missile that actually hit and hit hard finished him off.

That was pretty much the only action of Turn 1 and I had lost one of my main anti tank units

Turn 2 didn’t go much better with Belchmaw, the other Blighthauler, being caught in the open and taken out by another HK and HB fire from the Chimera. The Deathshroud did arrrive and took out a tech priest to stop him fixing any tanks. That left them in the open though and despite flamers on overwatch, they didn’t manage to finish off a squad of kasrkin that hopped out of a chimera.

That squad then softened them up sufficiently for the Dorns to finish them off the next turn. In hindsight though I’d dropped them in too far away from anything to do much damage. In the top left of the board my Plague Marines broke cover in a bid to get rid of one of the Dorns. A few Bolter rounds got it afflicted and everything else piled in. The Putrifiers grenades and some extra Lethal Hits managed to soften it up considerably. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to pop it open so they charged in. That got it down to 3 wounds but the Hail Mary had failed by this point.

Not sure this next pic is end of turn 4 as I’m pretty sure the plague marines died in turn 4. The Dorn fell back and let the kasrkin that jumped out of a chimera wipe them out. The other Dorn then made short work of the Deathshroud. The plague burst crawler in all of this had done next to nothing other than hitting the Dorn Commander with some spores in turn 1!

With most of my units gone, turn 5 was a bit silly, charging the Plagueburst Crawler through the ruins at a chimera in a hope of popping it, but failing. Gutrain was then finished off as the chimera fell back to let the dorn and other chimera shoot. So at the end of the game, all I had left on the board was Feculus my Tallyman who was hiding on my home objective failing to farm any CP!

Despite the near tabling it was a fun game. With the two agendas I picked, I managed to cultivate the plague quite nicely although the hosts got closer to being wiped out. Hopefully I can get some good progress against Custodes in the next round!

Spent a bit of time tonight at the painting desk finishing up the batch of Necron Warriors. There wasn’t much left to finish them, mainly a bit of dry brushing on their bases to get them frosty looking, a bit of black on their orbs and base rims, then a few spots of Valhallan Blizzard before calling them done.

I skipped the gloss varnish on their orbs as I felt the Abaddon Black was shiny enough and you can’t really see it on most models

And one from above because who doesn’t love snow!?

With all these Necrons and the eBay lot that I’ve now primed I’m looking forward to getting Tomb World next weeken. All the lovely extra Necrons and terrain should be good additions to what was once a finished army!

Thanks for looking

GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"

Hey Tommy, didn’t spot your post. Glad you like the upgrades, I quite like the old neon tubes too, but these ones were quite messy and beyond any saving, so they’ve been donated to my sprue goo pot and will help build future Necrons!

Exactly my thoughts! Primed up the next batch with Tomb World ready for collection next weekend!

Switched back to my Desth Guard projects. The Blighlords got all of their metals base coated as well as their fleshy bits, bones, cloth etc.

Now they’re basecoated, there’s really quite a lot of fabric/bone/fleshy bits on these guys. There’s a few spots I missed, but the. It’ll be wash time before I get on to highlights and weathering

Thanks for looking

Really digging the necrons! They look like cold, frosty warriors of death, who march forward no matter what.

Yeah, slow and steady wins the race for these guys!

Catching up a bit with Battle Reports. This time it’s the turn of my Dynasty of Khopret Necrons army who faced off against the cunning Leagues of Votann who obviously had an eye on the Overlords stash of relics. Fresh from being awakened by the Black Death Crusade wiping out the population of Hive World WY-4TT and finding thieving stunties on their doorstep there was only one plan, annihilation! Most of the army had a tough time overcoming my poor deployment, but the Skorpekhs decided to race forwards and destroyed a unit of Herthkyn that had advanced with the Votann Sagitaur.

Turn 2 was all about positioning. The Skorpekhs were destroyed by the concentrated fires of half of the squat army. The Lord, Mhozatek the Severing Maw survived and wanted to exact some revenge, moving closer to another Hearthguard squad, making sure to avoid Overwatch. On the opposite side Overlord Gho’berakh the Sterile Flame and his Lychguard made ready to charge some regular squats and a Sagitar.

Both made their charges and exacted some damage on their prey

Mhozek though was unable to finish the Hearthkyn and succumbed to all those below the waist hits from the squats. Meanwhile the Deathmarks continued to hold the home objective and guard over the blob of warriors advancing towards the central objective

Turn 3 saw the small blob break cover lead by my second Overlord, Tzun'ekh of the Hollow Vector, who stole the central objective taking the Sagitar in their sights. Unleashing his Tachyon Arrow to soften it up before the Gauss Flayers of his warriors popped it open

Gho’berakh chased down another gang of stunties and had some fun with them

Turn 4 was relatively uneventful with the main action being most of the remaining squats shooting at the Lychguard and then my warrior blob moving up to shoot at more squats. I forgot photos of the end but it ended with the Necrons shooing away the stunties.

A few learning points came afterwards and after my second game. Firstly the Overlords Resurrection Orb is once per battle and I overused it. Then the awakening agendas aren’t on top of the normal agendas, so I need to do some admin to fix my XP. Overall though a really fun game of chasing squats around the board.

Thanks for looking

Awesome updates Gobert, love the battle reports! 2 Dorns in a 1k list is brutal but gives me a good idea

Great work on the painting too!
