So I’ve been thinking of a name for my custom chapter.

I’ve come up with Jackals or is that a bad one?

Am ether thinking UM or RG successor.

Single-word names are pretty rare for Space Marine chapters.
I’d say put some adjective in front of it, like Crimson Jackals or Storm Jackals or something.

Raven Guard successors might be a good fit, considering the symbolism of Jackals being clever and mysterious.

Yeah it is an animal. I would go with Wolves but we had the Luna Wolves and Space Wolves.

Lol I can image my opponents face when I come in with Space Unicorns.

Honestly names come last when it comes to making any special force, chapter, or craftworld.

Its created from the history of that force. What other than being a ravenguard successor do they do? What are they famous for? Remember marines do not adopt their chapter name till they've made a name for themselves. Chapter customs are taken originally from their parent chapter (theorized).

I think you could do a write up and the name will slowly come up from just writing your chapter or playing with your chapter.

The imperial eagles, dark purple and gold, no relation to any other legion or chapter of a similar iconography

Jackals, when used as group names, usually have negative connotations.

What about how they act lumps them in with thieves, ruffians, assassins, and soldiers of fortune?

That aside, it has a lot of potential for a decent name. Just not for a more noblebright style chapter.

I used to use the Knights Indomitable chapter, with royal purple base and silver and gold trim.

I've also had the Yellow Jackets chapter back when I first started. Black and Yellow with some orange thrown in for eyes and power weapons.

I'll be honest, that's a frigging awesome name...but you can have it for free. It's a gift from me to you, it was Christmas not too long ago after all!

Jackals sounds good. In the US wolves, foxes and jackals are the names of murderers. Wolves are professional hit men funded by government agencies. Foxes are random individuals who go on bombing or shooting sprees and are self motivated. Jackals are hired independent assassins.

Raven Guard successor would fit nicely. Maybe they ally with the Assassin Temples often or are based near one of the assassin Temple Worlds.

From a book called "Wolves, Jackals and Foxes: A History of Assassination in America" or something like that. Very interesting read.

Bear in mind that the name of the chapter can depend on the paint scheme of your minis. My custom SM chapter are called the Grave Diggers. Therefore I use black as the army colour and a tombstone for the chapter insignia.
