A tricky question.

Lets say I have a unit of Tyranid Shrikes....from the Index of course.

I can arm them with a Venom Canon, and Deathspitter.

They also have Synapsis and Shadows in the Warp. [common abilities]

So ALL of these are different in the Codex.

1) Is Synapis 8" or 12"[the most recent update for that ability in the codex]

2) Is Shadows of the Warp 12" or 18" [the most recent update for that ability in the codex]

3) Does the DeathSpitter have 18" range or 24"[the most recent update for that weapon in the codex]

4) Does the Venom Cannon Do 1 wound at -1 AP or d3 wounds at -2 AP[the most recent update for that weapon in the codex]

So this seems the intent would be simple. You use the most recent updates for those Abilities/Weapons.

If you agree with this then what about the Eldar

So you have an Autarch With Warp Jump Generator with Path of Command [in the index it is a datafax ability; then in the codex it becomes a 'Common' ability in the Codex]

The Autarch also has a Banshee Mask.

In the Index the Banshee mask lets the Autarch always fight first. In the Codex the Banshee Mask prevents Overwatch.[the most updated version of the item]
Which version of the mask do you use?

In the index the Path of Command does not give a Warlord Autarch the Command Point refund roll. In the Codex it does[the MOST updated version of the ability]
It seems the Path of Command has been updated so does the Index Autarch get do to that now?

thanks.

The last page of the designers commentary is pretty clear about this :

Spoiler:

DOES YOUR MODEL HAVE A
DATASHEET IN A CODEX?

- NO -

USE THE INDEX VERSION OF YOUR
MODEL’S DATASHEET

If your model is not in the codex you use the index datasheet with index rules, even if some wargear has been updated in the codex. Psychic powers arent wargear, its index rules as well.

Spoiler:

DOES YOUR MODEL HAVE A
DATASHEET IN A CODEX?

-YES-

ARE THERE WARGEAR OPTIONS FOR YOUR
MODEL THAT ONLY APPEAR IN THE INDEX
VERSION OF ITS DATASHEET?

-YES-

USE THE CODEX VERSION OF YOUR
MODEL’S DATASHEET, BUT YOU CAN
CHOOSE TO USE THE INDEX VERSION FOR
ITS WARGEAR OPTIONS (NOTE THAT IF
THE WARGEAR HAS RULES IN THE CODEX,
THESE REPLACE THE INDEX RULES)

If your model is in the codex you use codex rules for the model, but index rules for the wargear, if this wargear is not in the codex. If this wargear has rules in the codex you use these.

p5freak has it correct, you have to use the index whole-cloth for Shrikes, they don't benefit from anything updated in the codex except for weapon profiles and costs.

So reading this over....The Banshee Mask, Venom Canon and Desthspitters would be from the Codex versions

The Path of Command, Synapsis andShadows of the Warp would be from the index?

BECAUSE nowhere on that chart does it mention Abilities....only Wargear.

Partially correct. For Path of Command the Autarch has a Codex Datasheet, so you use the Codex Datasheet and get the Codex Rule. Shrikes don't have a Codex Datasheet so you use the Index Datasheet with the Index Rule.

The Autarch Warp Jump Generator is its own Datafax. The Autarch, Autarch Swooping Hawk Wings and Autach Skyrunner are datafaxes in the Codex....

so I believe it gets the same treatment as the Shrikes.

Really I think it is just silly and rules lawyering for it to work this way, and should be a FAQ; that there can be 2 existing rules for the 'same named' ability. No need to clutter up the game when a simple FAQ could put in a fix.

And now we come to the crux of the issue. Does an your Autarch model have an entry in the Codex? It depends on how you define "has an entry in the codex". The same problem happens with the Leman Russ Demolisher and the Big Mek.

When building my 2nd edition lists every week, it takes me less than 15 min to add up all the upgrades, the weapons, the wargear cards, the vehicle upgrade cards, etc.Except for the characters it is really simple...that Striking Scorpion is 26 points with everything included....simple.

I find myself spending up to an hour on a list in 8th double checking if this pistol or that grenade, that wargear etc has a cost, etc. It is very convoluted.

They should make 1 Autarch datafax and then you can 'buy that bike with the extra stats as a +1, you can buy those Wings, or Warp Jump, etc.

They used to know how to do this stuff. Why is it more complicated than it needs to be?

Because of IP Lawyers and GW sniffing their own farts. They have the opinion we should be thankful we got points costs at all.
