I know that you really have to buy Grey Knights for a Grey Knights army. Their armor is so different from any other army, that it's really not easy to paint up regular tac marines (for example) and call them Grey Knights. But, what about Space Wolves? Do they need the upgrade kit that is sold by GW, or can you paint up any marines as Space Wolves (as long as they don't need a mount and aren't wolfen)?

Thanks

Of course, it's mostly just the paint scheme that makes them SWs.

Ignore the GKs in this photo, but the Grey Hunter and Long Fang in this pic are just regular Marines that I added little details to:

I'd still recommend getting at least 1 SW box set (not the upgrade kit, the actual box of SWs*). There are TONS of little extras in that set. You theoretically just get the 1 set, but then get several Tactical Marine/Devastator boxes and have all the SW Marines you'd need. That 1 set have enough to lightly sprinkle over several "generic" Marine kits

I got a question. Did you free hand the PA GK personal heraldry?

Yes. And it isn't as hard as you might think.
I started with the red and white divided by a line that was lower than center (i.e more white on top than red below)
Then I carefully painted red going up in "bars". For this step, I did not worry at all about the tops of the red, only the vertical lines and spacing.
Once that was dry, I then painting an even white line over the uneven red tops.

It is pretty much up to who you play vs. TBH I am fine playing vs tokens so I would be fine playing vs tac marine GK even so space wolf would be a none issue. But on the other hand I have met people who would not let me use the iron hands chapter tactic since I painted my army like ultra marines.

Honestly, I prefer Space Wolves built off of regular kits rather than the hyper-wolfified version. But as others have said, a Space Wolves Pack kit is still full of great little parts to put on your other models. A wolf tail here and there isn't a problem, it is when they are covered with them.

If you want to go the extra mile, use your hobby knife to carve runes into the armor rather than just painting runes on. It looks more authentic.

I think the better question is why Scouts aren't available to Deathwatch!

because the death weatch consists of elite veterns forwarded to the chapter. and thus scouts, whom are novices wouldn't make sense?

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Deathwatch RPG gave you the ability to use Scout armor for covert operations. This was established a long time ago.

If Scouts were added to the Deathwatch army list, they'd be something more like Space Wolves Scouts (or ordinary Scout Sergeants) - veterans in carapace armour rather than new recruits.

Many of my SW are just regular marines getting painted with SW colors.

We're gonna need another Timmy!

Which is exactly what I want. Even as not troops, they'd be a cool Fast Attack option.

What they would give to a group of Vets I dunno though.
