Subject: Question for people who know about mechanical stuff

Hi, just a quick question. Are the holes in the exhaust pictured below actually supposed to be...
1: holes that go all the way through and just limited by the casting process of the model...
OR
2: are they part of some kind of (heat dissipation?) cladding with a solid exhaust pipe underneath?
Thanks in advance for your answers!
Credit to whitetornado for the pic that I found through google.

It's an outer layer to cool the exhaust by allowing air to flow around it. It also stop people touching the hot pipes underneath whilst allowing the heat to dissipate.

Number 2.
Well, I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but that is what many heat shield that are around exhausts look like. There are likely several reasons why it's better to usually have holes in it, rather than just a pipe over another pipe (mostly because some sort of interplay between conduction and convection, not to mention just covering it would be more insulating, in that case).

Yep, it's simply an exhaust shield. In reality it's supposed to protect items and peoples' fleshy bits from touching the actual exhaust (you'll see them all the time on big rig trucks).
However, don't ever grab one thinking it'll be anything other than boiling hot metal - just slightly less boiling hot than the normal exhaust. It is perforated to allow air flow and reduce weight.

I have drilled these out on one of my Rhinos.
Now I have to do it on all of them (only 3 more, so not too bad)
I'd forgotten that there should be a pipe behind the holes. Doh.

Yeah I've drilled them out on my Rhinos and dreads as well. I feel a bit silly only thinking of it this late!

The exhaust inside the heat shield isn't supposed to have holes. So when you drill out the recesses, you are actually risking the vehicle not passing it's next emission test ;-]

yeah... oops
Though, I'm not sure emissions tests are a big thing on most forge worlds.
