Subject: Where do the souls of the dying go to? The warp?

Just a quick lore question. If someone in the 40k universe dies, his soul goes to the warp, right?
Are there any known instances where this soul can be reached or even put back into a body of some sort?
Cheers

I kind of want to know what happened to the souls of Curze, Alpharius, and the Gorgon.

Yes, though normal human souls tend to dissociate in the process.
Cyrene - the Word Bearer's "Blessed Lady" - had her soul brought back and her body reanimated in Betrayer
I kind of want to know what happened to the souls of Curze, Alpharius, and the Gorgon.
The Gorgon's may be floating about in the warp, given what the emperor summons in Master Of Mankind.

Haha, exactly what I was thinking of. I'm toying with the idea of starting a night lords warband which tries to get in contact with Curze.
And thanks for the reply Iocarno.

It's not unheard of. Cyrene came back. The Visarch has died and then been resurrected. In Fracture of Biel Tan, Ynnead is shown to have the power to restore the souls of the Rubric Marines (not quite the same, but very close, and implies it could restore other dead souls to life if it wished).
The Warp isn't called the Sea of Souls just to be poetic; that's pretty much literally what it is. When you die, you join it and are subject to its tides. In most places, that means an eternity of agony. In places the psychic presence is very calm, then maybe it's a little more serene.
It's certainly not a happy, shiny afterlife sort of situation.

I think it can vary. Your standard soul doesn't have the strength to remain coherent so it just fades. Faithful people like you find in the Imperium and Chaos join with the "power pool" of their deity. More powerful souls can remain themselves and get to spend eternity dodging warp predators.
If you're a really lucky duck you died when Chaos wasn't a thing and you either fade away or got to resurrect yourself.

Most human souls dissipate into the warp. Stronger souls like the Eldar remain intact. Prior to the Fall, they would reincarnate but now they are just tasty snacks for Slaanesh, hence the Waystones (for the Craftworlders at least).
As for the Primarchs, it is not clear. I would have no problem believing that their souls are strong enough to retain their integrity upon death. Both Dante and Mephiston have received visions from Sanguinius that seem to be more than just the ramblings of a troubled subconsciousness.

Dissipate into the warp.
Sounds like more lies from the Emperor.
Torn to shreds by daemons more like it.

The souls of the Faithful are protected by the Emperor. The souls of heretics are damned to the Immaterium and must endure the unending agony of being feasted upon for all eternity. Aliens are foul, unfortunate things and have no souls.

Yes and no, Torgaddon died and Chaos brought his soul back with a possessed, so their personality still exists, not sure about the soul as the sea of souls is just information and they could create a personality from the knowledge about say Torgaddon, but who knows about the soul.

Not so, there is no lore on whether Humans just dissipated into the warp, in fact there are theories that the Shamans that reincarnated into the Emperor could reincarnate because the warp didn't eat up their souls at the time and which is why they could reincarnate.

It varies. Human souls go to the warp, and then fizzels out. Think of it like a hard atheist model where consuisness is an inherent property of the there is nothing after death. But here there is an exsyra step, and there is nothing after the soul fizzels out. Essentially the same, buy you can do things with an intact soul.
Eldars souls used to get reincarnated. But before that happens now slaanesh eats them. You can get stuck in a soulstone. Witch is just a mute idea on a long enough time scale. Supposebly harlequins are safe.
Necrons lost their souls long ago. Nids have no soul. Do not know about C'tan, Tau, Kroot, GSC.

I know not everyone on Dakka is a native English speaker, but would it be terribly rude if every now and again, we could remind each other that the post boxes come with an automatic spell checker built in?

Yes it would be terrible rude. Not only are some of us not native english speakers, some of us are dyslextic. It is like asking why people in wheelchairs do not just use the stairs. Also, dakka has not quite caught on to technology as the automatic spell chekker doea not function on mobile phones. Dakka should collect some money and hire a programmer.
But why do you need to type on a mobile phone I hear some say. Well to have the same comforts as every one else. I am asuming Ginjitzu is typing on a mobile phone, otherwice this person would have seen my signature where it says I am dyslextic. *Insert unflattering comment here in your general direction.*

There's an interesting exception/question with regards to this, specifically with the object of cloning. Spoilers ahead:

Hm, are memories tied to the soul though? Or is the clone able to remember stuff, although the original soul of Horus was banished?
But interesting thought indeed!

I beg your pardon. I didn't realize that the spell checker doesn't work on mobile devices.

There's a certain claim system in the warp where souls are concerned. Entities can claim and steal souls from one another. The biggest example of this is slaanesh having a claim on all the Eldars souls. Demon princes commonly give their souls to a greater power and are instead fueled with warp stuff, giving them all manner of powers. Generally if you're devoted to an entity that entity has a claim to your soul when you die. This is particular important where the Emperor is concerned 'cause man he gets lots of fuel. If an deamon kills you that deamon will also devour your soul. The demonic entities are almost always hungry. sacrificing someone to a entity hands them the soul directly. the soul then becomes a conduit to said entity where reality can be warped in all manner of ways. The exact rules for this vary from author to author. Souls are not equal and have a loose "potential" rule to them. An incompetent planetary governor has a much more powerful soul then a driven rebel leader who fights for a cause, for example. It's a very very intricate subject.

His pattern of returning alive after being declared dead occurred often enough during Cain's career that the Munitorum made a special ruling that Ciaphas Cain is to never be considered dead, despite evidence to the contrary. |
