3 questions about priming:

1. How good is armypainter spray primer, as compared to GW?
2. What do you guys think about getting a surgical dust mask for use when priming?
3. How does brush-on primer (again armypainter) compare to the spray-on kind? Does it take the same time to dry, create the same bind, and does it smell of acetone as it dries?

1. - don't know as never used AP primer
2. depends on where you spray. I once sprayed my SoBs in a small shed. For a week after, I was staining tissues red whenever I blew my nose! If I'm outside I wouldn't worry but ensure the temperature is above around 18 celsius & it's not windy.
3. you never get the same, slightly dusty texture with brush-on which you want so the paint can 'grip' to the surface better (IMO).

a mask isnt really necessary unless youre going to be spending lots of time in the spraying environment, but if you want the protection then its not going to do you any harm.

I count #3 as a plus actually. That slightly dusty texture never goes away, and the model doesn't have the "smooth" texture you're really looking for. Before I started using an airbrush to prime, I'd prime with a brush using brush on primer, specifically to avoid that texture on my models.

1.) ive used AP spray can primers (the metal and bone color) and lover them. YOu have to spray closer than you would with a normal Auto Primer you pick up at Home depot though.
2.) mask, not really, just spray outside, check wind direction.
3.) brushing primer is inconsistent, i wouldnt do it.

Thanks for the tip re: AP primer! I do prefer to spray when possible. Unfortunately I live in the frozen hell that is Ottawa, so priming outside is not really an option most of the time :(
