I'm painting a banner right now and am considering using Auric Armor Gold to freehand a grail design. Is that generally considered a bad idea, and if so what alternatives could I use?

Generally banners will have metallics represented with non metallic techniques. Using metallics wont look as good.

Generally agreed. I think you can have metallic thread/wire woven into cloth, though, so there's definitely a case to be made for using actual metallics.

But yeah, generally this is where you want to go with traditional 2D painting techniques since it doesn't get much more 2D than stitched art on cloth.

I think the scale is too small to really replicate the effect of metallic threads. It looks alright on your cloak, with just picking out the upper areas.
