So everyone am starting a new purely Primaris force what chapter do you recommend?

I’ve done all three of the chapters before as mini marines but I’ve decided to go Primaris now so any help would be appreciated.

I personally advocate for custom, but if not that, then Ultramarines.

They've got great support in transfers, they've got some really cool unique models in the form of the Victrix Guard and Lieutenant Calsius (although the upgrade sprue IMO is the worst of the five), blue is a really nice colour to paint, you have plenty of lore and modern 40k fluff to chew on for inspiration (Vigilus, Plague Wars, etc etc), and you have access to Guilliman, should you want him.

In game, they're all pretty evenly matched on their base units, but Ultramarines have it better as an all-Primaris army due to access to Calgar, the Victrix Guard and Guilliman.

I'm also a fan of Ultramarines, so am biased.

Ultramarines get all the support.

For fun, either do an obscure chapter or make up your own and choose your chapter tactics. Primaris Marines are great canvasses to be creative with.

I'd recommend custom chapter as well, but of these three choices the Imperial Fists. They have good solid fluff that isn't terribly silly and pretentious, and they have a strong colour scheme which looks amazing when weathered properly.

Definitely not Ultras, that shade of blue makes everything look terrible.

Maybe a custom chapter

Definitely a custom chapter, though it'd hurt you competitively.

How did you guys decide on a chapter I always find it difficult as I change my mind a lot.

That depends entirely on your preference for tournament play or casual/narrative play.

The easy answer is to create a custom chapter, and then you can use whichever Chapter Traits you like (you'd just want to skip the special characters normally). Then you just playtest the traits and see which appeals to you.

From a simpler decision standpoint...pick the chapter that appeals to you visually or fluff-wise.

PS: Most important...consider how much stuff you'll be building and painting. Pick something you like, or you'll never finish the army.

Thanks the problem is I love the lore for alll three and like the colour schemes to.

I play and build around the fluff as am a massive lore geek.

I might leave them unpainted and play a few small games with each of the rules to see which I like.

I chose Knights of Gryphonne for the color, because long ago, back when marine chapters could pick traits and negatives, I made a chapter of orange marines, and I sort of wanted to do that again with Primaris, only this time metallic orange, which seemed closer to KoG artwork than bright orange. It got me a unique looking army that's still canon and can use basically any chapter trait.

You'll face dozens of Ultramarines armies over the years. You might see one Knights of Gryphonne, if you're lucky. But again, Ultramarines get all the support and goodies.

If I do another SM army (I have Salamanders too), I'll go Crimson Fists, because to me they are the OG Space Marines from the cover of Rogue Trader.

Ultramarines if you DON'T paint them the official colors.

What do you want to do with them? If you go purely for fluff and/ or aesthetic, take whatever strikes your fancy. If you also want to game more or less seriously with them, keep in mind that the synergy between the current line of Primaris and Blood Angels is... nearly non-existant. Sure, they can be used as support but all their lynchpin units are minimarines (DC, smash captains, special characters and the Librarian Dread). Also, their chapter tactic only triggers in melee and the only Primaris unit that is truly good in CC is the Gravis Captain (Aggressors and the Redemptor dread are somewhat decent as well). For the safe choice I'd take the Ultramarines but if your local meta features a lot of cover the Imperial Fists are the way to go because their chapter tactic allows them to ignore that.

I fight mostly Dark Elder,Necrons,Demons and Chaos Space Marines usually DG and BL. There can be a lot of terrain sometimes. It’s really between the IF and UM. I do like the fact the IF were at the siege of Terra I’ll probably wait till I’ve read the upcoming 1st book of the siege.

Do yourself a favour and don't choose to paint yellow as your main colour!

Well in Killteam you wont get to use their Chapter Tactics and Relics, all of which are pretty good for Primaris Armies.

Can you paint yellow? If yes, go Imperial Fists.

If no, go Ultramarines.

True I’ll paint them up for my KT and if I really like the colour I might do a force of them.

I say Deathwatch because it's the only good Primaris only army.

If you just want a colour scheme and use DW rules anyway I'd say Imperial Fists because it's rarer (and harder) to paint.

I’ve done yellow once but this time I’d be ushering averland spray then agax earthshade then lamenter yellow to make the yellow pop.

Is it still difficult to achieve a good yellow even when using the gw yellow spray?

Yellow is always difficult.

On second though, go Lamenters rather than Imperial Fists. Lamenters are the best chapter!

That’s a shame I really thought using the yellow spray as a primer would help and it wouldn’t be as difficult as before.
