So I have been playing Killteam for a while and play as the Death Guard and Space Marines. What units do I need for both factions to make the transition to reg 40k?

Your choice really.
Grab a copy of Dark Imperium to get started.

To expand a bit on places to go as you grow your collection from KT to 40k:
Most armies are formed on a core of 3 troop and 2 headquarter picks. This gives you a solid base of command points to work with. Depending on what you have in your KTs, and if you have commanders, you should be halfway there or more already.
You are going to need a mix of firepower, as now you need to deal with tanks and other big things. But still cleaning hordes off the table is important, so don’t skimp on chaff clearing. But a lot of the same principles hold true. Kill the other guy, preserve your force, get boots on objectives. Just the scale has been clicked up a few notches.
I can’t speak for the chaos side, but the DI box is a decent place to start. The marines are not top-table competitive level stuff, but are solid workhorse units. The one thing is it’s a little light on anti-tank firepower, so you might want to also find some units that you enjoy that pack some big guns.
