I've read a few of the new Guilliman novels but was wondering if there is any showing him in a more social aspect? So far its just been all business, wouldn't mind hearing of him an Calger swapping war stories or the like, doubt there are at the moment with so much going on.

Not really. Even Calgar is too much in awe of him to have anything resembling a relaxed conversation. There is no one resembling Aeonid Thiel for him to unload his thoughts. Decimus Felix (his equerry in Dark Millenium) is probably the closest nut the story is just too busy for this sort of interaction
His chat with the new Militant-Apostolic comes closest to being social but even then, it is hard to chat with someone who regards you as semi-divine.

I think when the other loyalist Primarchs come back, the writers will be able to take the focus off Guilliman so that aspect can be written about, that's what I hope anyhow.
I remember the first dark imperium novel having this be a minor plot point. He essentially has no one who he can have a normal conversation with or relate to as peer. A good part of one chapter is how lonely an isolated he feels. Everyone who he interacts with is either in awe of him or just isn't on his level with the possible exception of Cawl who he really would prefer not to deal with.
There's that woman in Plague Wars, whose name I've forgottent unfortunately. But she's able to have a casual conversation with Bobby, and he seems to appreciate her for that and for her sassiness towards him.
That is what I'm waiting for, though I'd rather have a HH book first in which they meet, would make the reunion so much better.

Great, haven't read plague wars yet. Will put it on my reading list.

The Custodes in DI are portrayed as arrogant and aloof, far moreso than their HH counterparts. 10,000 years guarding a holy corpse has made them insular. Whilst they don't grovel to Guilliman the way most others do, he doesn't seem to like their attitude to others.

he says he reminds him of Thiel but doesn't have that level of close friendship. although I'd love a 3rd Uriel Ventriss trilogy involving him and Gulliman

They are anything but arrogant, all the do is live to serve. That is why the Emperor loved the Custodes even more than the Primarchs, the Emperor hated that all the Primarchs cared about was glory. The Custodes seem arrogant because they are abrupt, but they simply are there to serve and do there duty they don't care about being polite, which is very well described in the master of mankind novel, with the armless blood angels legionary. They were perfectly capable of being sociable, like Ra who was the contact for the Emperor. You need to read master of mankind. That's why I collect custodes, they are astartes without the selfish glory seeking, they live to serve and do their duty.

The Custodes have spent the last ten thousand years guarding the result of putting too much trust in Space Marines. The Custodes know that they are incorruptible, and that Guilliman's brothers and sons are evidently not, and aren't particularly bothered to hide that attitude. They'll work with Guilliman, as he's been empowered by the Emperor Himself to take charge of His Imperium, but they're constantly watching, just in case.
Not the sort of thing that engenders a friendly relationship. I think he'll need to wait for Russ to come back before they can go out for a pint or ten.

I have read Master of Mankind and it is one of my favourite HH novels. However the Custodes in Dark Imperium are portrayed quite differently. The Custodes in MoM (and Ra in particular) were good at striking up rapports with whoever they needed to work with. The Custodes in DI clearly don't give 2 cents for anyone else in the room and make no effort to hide it.

Have to agree to disagree then.
What are you "agreeing to disagree" with? Your argument is "Custodes in MoM are great guys!" Karhedron's is "Custodes in MoM are great guys, but the Custodes in DI are not."
How does that oppose what you've said? Custodes seem to have changed from the HH to the current period of time, that's all. It's not like anyone's saying "Custodes in MoM didn't care for anyone else in the room and made no attempt to hide it".

Read the thread again, we are talking about Custodes being anti-social in Master of Mankind, which they are they, but its not because of arrogance which is my argument. They are consumed by their dudty and don't allow trivial things to get in their way like, like the pride of an armless blood angel in Master of mankind, where the writer describes that he doesn't look down on him, he just has no time to be tactful. In the HH they only struck up rapports with other legions they were fighting with. I'm simply saying they aren't arrogant like the smurfs are.

I have read the thread, and I come to the same conclusion.
Your point of "Custodes in MoM aren't arrogant" doesn't conflict at all with "Custodes in Dark Imperium are arrogant". Two different time zones, with very different circumstances creating a likely MASSIVE shift of attitude between pre/mid Heresy Custodes and 10,000 year post-Heresy Custodes.
There's no need to "agree to disagree" at all because both yours and Karhedron's points aren't mutually exclusive.

Not so, no other legion or army has more stringent training. Give us an example of the Custodes in Dark Imperium being arrogant then?

Name a time where the Ultramarines are nearly as arrogant as the custodes, or hell, the Space Wolves or Dark Angels.
Somehow you hate Ultramarines but want to know more about books with Guilliman, lol.

When they breathe. Come on man, the Ultramarines bar the Emperors children and Eldar are the most arrogant faction ever. And they are actually arrogant, they think they are better than every other chapter and like to lord it over other legions, they don't say abrupt factual things due to them not paying attention to other peoples feelings or pride like the Custodes. If it doesn't help their mission/service to the emperor they don't care about sparing your feelings.

Compared to the Dark Angels, who think they are the best because they are the First Legion, or the Space Wolves, or bawdily sing about their awesomeness to anyone in hearing range? The Black Templar, who believe they alone are the ones still doing the Emperor's work, or that their champions can hear the Emperor.
I think you might be heavily biased, as the Ultramarines don't lord anything over anyone. The only one that might be really arrogant is Sicarius, and Sicarius is on a short leash being kept near Guilliman.

The Dark Angels have never struck me as that arrogant, they are miserable bastards but the only time they show arrogance is to the wolves but they have a history, The wolves are boastful but they don't gak on everyone else, if you can fight they'll give you all the respect in the world the blade breaker in Emperor's gift. Black Templars are more misguided. no it is you being biased. you've been asked to provide evidance to back up your claim. you haven't. all you've done is scream "BUT THEY'RE ARROGANT DON'T YOU SEE" we're asking for proof. as the saying goes, put up or shut up. if the Ultramarines are soooooooooo arrogant, you can provide evidance of their being arrogant I'm sure?
So far all you've said is they seem to belive their chapter's got the best way of doing things, this is hardly unique to the ultramarines.

Yeah, Custodes are awesome, but they ain't all humble and nice like you seem to be making out.

Ask, and ye shall receive:
Plague War wrote:‘We are done here.’ The primarch’s rage turned off. The heat left the room. He seemed smaller again.
‘Watch your step, priest,’ said Colquan. ‘The Lord Guilliman might not move against you, but there is nothing stopping me.’
‘Colquan,’ said Guilliman. ‘Enough.’
Colquan pointed at Mathieu. ‘I am watching you.’
‘Colquan!’ Guilliman went to the door.
As we see, a clear lack of tact, and actually requires Guilliman to shut him up.
Dark Imperium wrote:‘And Tribune Maldovar Colquan of the Heiratokoi leads this delegation from the Adeptus Custodes.’
Calgar bowed. ‘It is an honour to stand before someone who personally serves the Emperor.’
‘I serve whether I am away from the Imperial Palace or within it,’ said the tribune, a retort to an insult that had not been delivered. His voice was unfriendly through his voxmitter.
Complete lack of any kind of political politeness or tact.
Plague War wrote:‘Let him come. I’ll happily show him my skill with a blade,’ said the Custodian, Colquan.
Cute line, but considering that at this moment, he's in a war council with Guilliman, Sicarius, Felix, and Sisters of Silence, and HE'S the one who goes for the whole "I'm gonna stab him" line, it's completely out of character for the 30k Custodians.
I'd like to hope this gives you cause to reconsider. Again, this doesn't take away from the 30k Custodes - it's only to show that even the Custodes, over 10,000 years, have changed too.

"Guilliman turns the stylus in his hand, thoughtful. It takes discipline to die in such numbers. It is one
of the reasons that a bladed T’Vanti cordulus hangs on his compartment wall. He believes he has the
most disciplined military force in the Imperium, and given the quality of the other Legions, that is
quite a claim. Still, he is not sure even his Ultramarines would display such a deep degree of
discipline, such a T’Vanti degree."
There is one for example, also Matt Ward. The Ultramarines aren't arrogant, give me a break.

Bit hyperbolic there. Come on, give us some sources.
All your quotes just proved what I said, they have no consideration for tact, you need a quote that shows that with context like the author saying 'as the custodes thinks he's better than...' All you have shown is they have no tact and are abrupt. Master of Mankind explains why that is.
