I've been playing around with the idea of starting a full on Legion of the Damned, but there are some obvious obstacles not least of which is the fact that it is not a real faction in the game. The rule of 3 further compounds this problem as I would only be able to field three units of actual Legion of the Damned models. I'm wondering what ideas others might have for the best way to put together a full themed army.
Option 1: Convert some regular space marines and use the chapter tactics from an existing rule set that seem the most fluffy for Legion of the Damned. I'm thinking Raven Guard rules based on the lore I've read.
Option 2: Run a primarily guard army that is protected by a Legion of the Damned vanguard. Won't be as epic looking, but probably makes the most sense lore wise.

There's like a short story about a single guardsmen left being saved from Cultists and csm by the legion of the damned. Loved it. If GW makes new models...

Run as Deathwatch. Allows appearing from nowhere via Stratagem, better ammo to represent supernatural bolters and mixed loadouts for heroic units. Could even do counts-as Storm Shields for the 3++.
In fact, I may do just this!

Actually what all does LotD have? 3++ and bolters that ignore cover?
Deathwatch does that too and then some.
This is a really good idea

Certainly gives some scope beyond just ‘one expensive Elites choice’.
Damn. I gotta pillage eBay for bargain Marine job lot to convert again now...

Good idea on using Death Watch. My 2e LotD army might just see the table again!

They don't ignore cover by default but they have AP-1 or 2 on their weapons which is close enough for a Bolt weapon.

Deathwatch also lets you have a Ghost Rider-esque biker in your squads, if that floats your boat!

Oh. I think they had that in 7th? Either way I'm tempted to do this. I've been wanting to play LotD for so long and I don't thing GW is going to redo them

That round now just gives a +1 to hit units in cover.
It is now a bad option to use ever pretty much. Like, yeah you can have Daemons in cover but the Helfire would still likely do more.

Hur-mhur-gherd that Deathwatch idea is perfect! Thank you JohnyHell!
Just spit-balling here, as I’ve never read the Thousand Sons codex, but I’m pretty sure they’re basically ghost-marines in fluff. Their rules would likely give the right flavour as well.

They're dust in armor suits, except the Psykers. They're still flesh and blood.

A deathwatch army painted as legion of the damned would be absolutely stellar.
