Subject: Games Workshop shying away from certain models?
JohnnyHell wrote: “These GW releases with vehicles in have vehicles and Knights I don’t think count as vehicles... Where are the vehicles GW?”
Not the greatest place to start a thread, tbh...
I said in the beginning that I was talking about transports. There Hasn't been a single release of a new transport since the Repulsor came out over two years ago. In addition I added tanks, as in real Main Battle Tanks to the list. I then noted that 80% or more of the model releases since that time have been some sort of infantry models.
I'm not talking about knights.
I'm not talking about dreadnoughts.
I'm not talking about little pew pew cars.
I 'm talking about transports and battle tanks. Primaris still do not have a Rhino replacement, that sort of thing.
No you didn't. Your OP:
Togusa wrote:I was noticing that lately there haven't been any vehicle releases, with the exception of the buggies and similar cars in GSC and Orks.
This got me thinking, could they be moving away from vehicles and fliers for 40K? I mean, if you don't include the GSC and Ork release, when was the last time they put out an actual vehicle kit? Was it the Repulsor?
Could they be trying to move the game into the realm of an infantry game?
You might have clarified a few posts later, but that would easily be missed. Learn to edit.
If your gonna fly off the handle at people, at least be correct.
Cool. Now that we've established the discussion, care to comment on the lack of these "kinds" of vehicles?
Will we see more, or are they moving us to a more mobile infantry based game, leaving tanks and things to Apoc?

But they're not leaving "tanks and things to Apoc"...?
Most of the armies that have been getting stuff already have some heavily established ranges. Hell, when the GSC dropped initially last edition? They got a "tank/transport" right off the bat.
Skitarii and Cult Mechanicus didn't, but had alternative methods(one of Cult's easiest accomplished Formations gave you Deep Strike and Skitarii had Scout moves) that made it so they were seemingly unnecessary.
The only vehicle that Primaris have gotten was a tank with transport capacity that can effectively be equated with the Land Raider or Razorback: guns and transportin'.

There are plenty of large non-infantry kits that have come out in the last 2 years so no, I do not think GW are shifting the focus more towards infantry.
The problem is that you have artificially narrowed your definition of vehicle to exclude all the large kits that have come out. The fact that you are choosing to ignore Knights, buggies, daemon engines and Dreadnoughts does not mean GW have suddenly decided to make their 8th edition releases infantry-centric.
You are restricting your definition of "vehicle" and then wondering why there are so few of them recently.
I stand between the darkness and the light. Between the candle and the star.

I know you were joking with this, but if GW dropped a Drukhari vehicle styled similarly to the Venom with some beefier guns, I'd buy three in a heartbeat.
Anyway, I agree with the sentiments that the OP is perhaps too limited in their scope of defining 'vehicles.'
Complaining about there being no new vehicle releases while excluding the two new Knight Lights, the Super Knight, two new Daemon Engines, Five(!) Ork Buggies, and the GSC Humvee that have come out in the past year is like complaining about a lack of bike releases while only counting Eldar jetbikes.

There has been a lack of transport vehicles lately, though most factions already have a few or just don't need them. Even the Repulsor isn't really taken for it's ability to move models around, that is just a nice bonus in addition to ALL THE GUNS.

I don't like vehicles. I love my infantry. I can personalice every single guy, with interesting poses.
i know you can personalice vehicles, and make them have their own story, personality, etc... but for me it isn't the same.
I don't miss them.
In the other hand I love all walkers in the game. Dreadnoughts, Wraithlords, Killa kanz, Deff Dreads, Imperial Knights, Ork Knights, Sentinels, Hellbrutes, etc...
And Piranhas, because they are basically a Ghost from the Covenant
Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

I am the exact opposite.
I don't know why anyone would want to play with a ton of infantry, they're infantry. There's a lot of them, they're unexciting, and tiresome to paint [because they're boring and tiny]. Also, they don't have lots of little fun markings like tank tactical diamonds that I can lecture my unlucky victim opponent about.
I love tanks. I also hate walkers, because walkers are stupid. They're less stable, less mobile, and cannot carry as much armor or as large a weapon as a tracked or wheeled vehicle because of the limitations of a walker's choice of motive system.
Like, if I could play a game entirely with tanks and artillery, that would be pretty cool. I don't hate infantry, to be fair. I like the mental image of a lot of infantry running up over the top of a trench to charge a entrenched artillery line, slogging through mud, craters, wire, and over the dead bodies of their comrades to reach the enemy; or armored personnel carriers rolling over the no-mans land and then deploying soldiers directly into the enemy position to sweep them out at close range. I just don't think infantry models are exciting models to build, and generally find them boring to paint.
And considering that Kill Team exists for people who want personal heroism and nothing bigger than a guy, I'd like regular 40k to include more armor and artillery.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

It's a strictly worse baneblade than a guard baneblade, because it gets no trait, but you CAN have it.

One thing that has made me very sad is that Riptides have basically been emplaced to make Hammerheads obsolete since their inception, replacing the cool hover tanks with stupid robots. Walkers are something that I really, really hate. As I already mentioned, a bipedal walker is less stable on the move than a tracked or wheeled vehicle, is slower, and can't carry as much weight. In addition, it's less able to absorb the recoil of large guns and remain stable [making it more difficult to fire repeatedly at a target], and has higher ground pressure [giving it poorer ability to move in soft ground]. Also, due to higher CG, they can't climb or traverse as steep grades and can't cross as wide a ditch. Theoretically, they have better fording depth and vertical obstacle crossing ability, though the ability to actually keep footing and move on a silty riverbed with a heavy vehicle placing all it's weight on a small footpad is questionable. Also, simplicity is relevant. with so many mobile joints, there is significantly more matinainence demands, and it's structurally unsound. the majority of a tanks systems are safely within the armored box or protected by skirts, while a walker's legs protrude and neccecarily have to have separations in the armor for the legs to actuate, creating vulnerable areas and areas where otherwise insignificant damage instead results in a total mission kill. Also, an immobilized tank is still a stable firing platform until destroyed or abandoned, a walker with severe leg damage tips over and is no longer usable.

Like other have said GW is trying to become more distinct so giant robots, drop ships and like over generic tanks.
And as 3d printers get cheaper and more common, and more fan created files available for free, I would expect that 40k will become a lot more focused on heroes and big stuff rahter than infantry. When anyone can print off a few 100 IG/Orks/Nids/Marines on their table GW will have to focus on stuff that's too big to print or too cool not to buy.

GW aren't focusing on vehicles because they are the last thing the needs to be updated, I mean even the humble leman russ and rhino still look good the land raider will never look better. Plus they just released the repulsive not long ago and the plagueburst crawler...
That's why they are releasing infantry, walkers etc.
I mean in all honestly, who would play 40k without vehicles, it would be ridiculous. I would seriously find it hard to want to play if they did that.

The announcement that Apocalypse is being redone guarantees many vehicle releases, and just like every Kill Team or Blackstone unit includes 40k rules, Apocalypse will too.
Sisters players are hoping for a plastic Repressor with official codex support- that would fit OP's transport request.
Slaanesh is gettin some love soon- both Daemons and Emperor's Children I suspect. Daemon monster won't matter to OP, and if Emperor's Children get a vehicle, I suspect it will be Noise Marine Dread. A sonic tank could be pretty epic though.

All very good, realistic points, but there's a LOT of walkers in 40k. Dreads, Killa Kans, Penitent Engines, War Walkers, Sentinels, Knights, etcetera. Heck, most of the big Nids are pretty impractical as well. Some dumb things work in 40k.
I generally like walkers but even I think GW went too far with the Tau walkers. I still haven't built my Riptide, but I don't think I'll ever own more than one of those.

How do you work that out? Killteams is just like any other sub game, I've been through these trends since 2nd, 3rd edition ect. Epic, gorkamorka etc. Sub games have always sold doesn't mean they will efect the main game.

That's why they are releasing infantry, walkers etc.
I mean in all honestly, who would play 40k without vehicles, it would be ridiculous. I would seriously find it hard to want to play if they did that.
Repulsor, plagueburst, Goliath, new ork buggies, achilles ridgerunner...I've got a shiny nickel that says Sisters get at least one new vehicle sculpt.
If the question is "why aren't they jamming tanks/transports into factions that already have complete vehicle lines" i'd wager it's because the last couple times they tried to shove in vehicles to a niche that didn't really exist (The space marine hunter/stalker, ork gorka/morkanaut and the guard wyvern/hydra/taurox) those kits were not terribly successful for the financial investment they had to put in.
"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

The wyvern/hydra seems to do well. Everybody needed Hydra FlaK tanks, and the Wyvern was really good when it debuted. It's pretty overall adequate now, as well.
I would like to see a Medusa/Griffon/Colossus kit, perhaps joint with a re-done Basilisk. Also, a Destroyer Tank Hunter and Thunderer Siege Tank kit [especially since FW seems to have discontinued the Destroyer]. Though the Thunderer is basically just a Leman Russ Demolisher by a different name and appearance.

As others have said, most spaces for 'tank' type vehicles in the existing factions are full. Particularly imperium type tanks with lots of hard angles and straight lines don't age anywhere near as much as, say, infantry models of the same vintage. You can't exactly do them better nowadays except for messing with the scale and maybe cramming a few more options into the sprues.

I don't even have any guard and I'd love to see that. I think the Forgeworld IG tanks are almost universally cool, so more of them in plastic would only be a good thing.
Of the Eldar line, only the following sculpts are still from the 90s: Avatar, Phoenix Lords, Vyper Jetbike, Falcon, Warp Spiders.
A page late to this, but you missed a few...
3 out of the 4 warlocks (two of them are 2nd ed, one is 3rd. The only one newer than 2000 is the one from the 2002 Seer Council box)
Guardians (1999)
I'm also pretty sure that the Swooping Hawks say 1999 on the tab, even though it may have been 2000 before they actually came out.
As others have said, we really are seeing new vehicles, just not replacements for the old ones.
I do think that GW are shying away from a certain type of model now: remaking old models.
This is why we are not seeing new standard Marines, new aspect warriors, new ork boyz. It seems that most things they make now are completely new troops or vehicles and not updates to existing models.
I think this might be because GW have decided that they don't want collectors to just keep using their old models.
I would expect all factions to eventually get a primaris like treatment rather than updated versions of the same models.
