So, I’ve got a plan with this guy...he’s sold individually, and the box lists him at 19 points in matched play. Then it also gives abridged rules for noise marines in general. This guy CAN be taken on his own, not in a unit, right? Given how he has a set amount of points on his data sheet, that makes him capable of being his own unit, right? I’ve asked at my local, and I was given permission. But I’m asking online as well, so I don’t screw up if I ever bring him solo anywhere else.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Due to work, I can usually only ship any sales or trades out on Saturday morning. Please trade/purchase with this in mind.

What do you mean exactly by points on his Datasheet?

Points are not on Datasheets, they are listed separately. The datasheet will explicitly state how many models you need to take in the unit.

Additionally there are rules for "understrength" units. Any unit can be taken with less models that the minimum on its datasheet, but you need to put them in an auxiliary support detachment (therefore costing you CP).

His points, being a special model, are actually listed on his data sheet, right at the top. It’s a data sheet included with a limited edition model, not a data page out of the book.

Ah, apologies. What does it say about unit size?

Right under the stats there should be a line with something along the lines of "This unit contains..."

Wasn't ignoring, was at work and unable to answer. The exact wording is: "This box includes one model, which can be used in games of Warhammer 40k to represent a noise marine with a sonic blaster. If you are playing a matched play game, or a game that uses a point limit, this model and its equipment cost a total of 19 points. For your convenience, an abridged version of the NM datasheet can be found below."

It then lists the exact profile out of the book, including normal unit sizes (5-20) and any upgrades. The thing making me think he can go solo is that the model is unusable without having a NM unit (which hasn't been the case before for these limited models; they've all been fieldable on their own), and he has a set point cost of 19 for matched play. I'm kind of up-in-the-air about it, already got the "Okay" from my store from only a verbal discussion (I would show the sheet before doing it, of course), but I think it can be argued to either be eligable to replace a model in a unit for appearance's sake only, or be its own unit at 19pts. And a troop unit in an EC army, at that.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

The model just represents a noise marine with a sonic blaster, just like his paper says.

You cant use him solo.

You could use him solo as an undersized unit. Which has to be in an auxiliary detachment iirc.

p.243 of rulebook for under-strength units. "An understrength unit still takes up the appropriate slot in a Detachment." No mention of auxiliary, but you can only have one understrength of a given unit and you have to pay the points as if it's minimum sized.

In Matched Play you’re only allowed under strength in Auxiliary detachments to avoid single models filling up detachments to get CP. Introduced in an FAQ. Check the FAQ docs relating to Matched Play.

‘If you are using Power Ratings, you must still pay the
Power Rating cost as if you had a minimum-sized unit,
even though it contains fewer models. If you are using
points, you only pay the points for the models you
actually have in an understrength unit (and any wargear
they are equipped with). An understrength unit still
takes up the appropriate slot in a Detachment. If you are
playing a matched play game, you can only include an
understrength unit in an Auxiliary Support Detachment.

Isn't it wonderful how out of date rulebook is with all the fAQ's
