Hello, I'm new to the table-top game and I've just got the 8th Edition CSM Codex II, and I was looking throw and noticed the chosen, that got me thinking, I decide that I would try to use the regular Chaos Space MArine kit to make chosen, but I wanted to ask if anyone had any idea of how I could make these Chosen stand out apart from their equipment?

You could try to add the cloaks from the Warrors of Chaos from the Fantasy (age of sigmar) range.

They're fairly easy to cut up and add to the back of the marines.

You could paint them a little differently, different coloured helmet/ shoulder pads etc.

You could also put different helmets on them like the ones from the fantasy (age of sigmar) range.

You could kit bash them together with possessed marines as well, giving them a more mutated feel.

The cool thing about chaos is that the sky is the limit. Anything goes really.

AoS is pure garbage
Kill Primaris, Kill the Primarchs. They don't belong in 40K
40K is fantasy in space, not sci-fi

I was thinking about using some of the new daemons of the ruinstorm sculpts from 30k and messing around with the appendages and main body parts.

A few thoughts from my end.

1: Differant helmets, could be as simple as using MK3 heads, could mean going onto forge world and getting some of the various legion upgrade heads etc
2: Cloaks as others have mentioned
3: kitbash them out of CSMs and Havoks to make the Havoks notably bigger then standard CSMs.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Mutation, other armor, Reserve specific heads, use more precious metal for trimms on the armor, etc.

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

Perhaps the best question is, what type of theme are you going for?

What traits would make the chosen the extra blessed veterans you want them to be? Mutations, trophies and extra details would all help make them stand out from the rest of your lads.

I mix some spare bitz from my Age of Sigmar Khorne Mortal armies, so axes and helms from varanguard or skull reapers, weapons and flails as thunder hammers and so on.

It's actually surprisingly easy to do, try not to over think it as the new CSM kit lends it self very well to most chaos weapons despite the range.

Also I use greenstuff and spare Tyranid bitz for some amazing mutations, hell possessed are super easy to make this way!

Which faction?

Traitor legions have tonnes of Forgeworld stuff you can use. You can also make some kind of original helmet/shoulder pad combo "borrowed" from a loyalist kit, if you're confident in your modelling skills.

My Night Lord chosen have the Night Lord upgrade kit. And I'm 90% sure that you can get similar stuff for all of the other legions (I have some OOP metal emperors children shoulderpads and the old Iron Warrior upgrade kit that could be used for this kind of thing)

For Black Legion, something as simple as gold helms would probably be enough to stand out, in fact I think that was one of the schemes used in one of the older Codex books. As others have mentioned pieces of older armour marks mixed in, or maybe some AOS bits could look pretty good.

Take a look at what I've been painting and modelling: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/725222.page

Oh wow, the Black Legion would probably be the easiest to do Chosen for!

Have a look online to see if you can snag a copy of the Black Legion supplement for more outlandish ideas. For example, the Hounds of Abaddon are the Black Legions Khornate guys. They have special paint jobs for each Black Legionaire that's dedicated to a God, so if your chosen guys are for a particular God, that book will have you covered. They also have a group that has been rejected by chaos in some form (I think they're called oathbroken) that might give you alternative ideas.

You can also go the old route of painting a massive eight-pointed star across the whole model, as seen in this link: https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Chosen_%28Chaos_Space_Marines%29

Another thing worth considering is that (I think) there is only one head with upturned horns in the new chaos space marine troop box. You could give all of your chosen horned helms, as I think the implication of that set is that the horns go to the champion.

Chaos marines tend to have a mixture of steel and gold trim. The 'regular' marines tend to be more steel, the champions tend to have more gold. You can add extra ornamentation and use more 'heroic' posing to make the champions stand out further.

Chosen are basically just a squad of champions, so just build and paint them like that.

Thanks for the help! This gives me a few ideas for how this could work, thanks!

There are models for chosen in the DArk vengeance starter kit, it's no longer available from GW but you might be able to find a copy somewhere or go on ebay.
Otherwise could draw up on their backgrounds.
Are they old lunar wolves, cthonians, somehting else? As mentionened you can draw on forgeworld heresy era kits or add chains with coins for cthonians, wolf pelts for lunar wolves or both.
Assuming you mark them you can mix in kits from other legions, maybe even strike out their old icons.
Like the DV chosen, you can try to add bolters to their gear, although that's going to be hard since they no longer make individual bolters with grips, much to my chagrin.
Extra skulls are always an option, trophy racks that sort of thing
