Citation needed. I can't remember any failcast advertising based on health issues (and most resins are worse than white metals in that regard). Most touted reason was stable pricing due to volatility of metals market. (well, beyond that it would make better quality models, which was an outright lie)

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

For all the fuss with Finecast people forget why GW changed manufacturing policy, they moved away from lead alloy ahead of other manufacturers for reasons of employee health, then moved away from white metal for the same reason. Despite scum like Kirby GW has in some aspects very good business ethics.

I recall talking to GW staffers, some who had moved on, and they said training/experience they got with GW really set them up well in customer interaction and handling.

As for finecast I recall that the main reason GW switched was because the price of metal kept going up and down very fast for them. Basically it was becoming very hard for GW to forecast their costs to do business and manufacture because one of their core production materials was jumping around in price. Plus there was the fact that it was going up far more than it came down and places like china making a sudden big order could spike it very fast. GW thus wanted to shift to finecast as a more stable material whilst also letting them use their current moulds so they could do the change fast rather than having to recast moulds for what was likely at the time, half or more of their range (a huge loss esp considering metal was used for a lot of hero and small sales volume models).

I do recall reading at the time that finecast was also found to be one of the safer materials to work with from a health point of view as well, though such matters are hard to pin down and it might only be rumour/hope/general commentary rather than specific proven science.

Suffice to say finecast had its issues too, but we've also seen GW really push plastics to new levels and also open up to using them on basically everything from core troops to unique characters and huge expensive models.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Might be confusion on my part.

Health was a prime reason why GW werre early adopters of moving away from lead based minis in the late 80's.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

The story I always heard was NY State classified miniatures as toys and subject to rules on lead content.

(Allegedly because of a nasty divorce case where the wife claimed the husband's miniatures were a health hazard for their kids)

Seeing the way the wind was blowing everyone moved towards white metal.

So health issues, but an exaggerated fear for the customers rather than employees.

Yeah, the lead change wasn't for employee benefit, it was to ensure they wouldn't be restricted from locations that were starting to legislate against lead.

It wasn't that NY did legislate against lead on toys - just that they were considering doing so.

By memory the "White Metal" that replaced the Lead was mainly a Tin based compound. When Finecast came out China was buying up and dominating the worlds Tin supply. The price of Tin was unstable and was going up. Unstable prices are a problem for businesses. That is why GW went to resin, the infamous Finecast. From what I have heard.

For a time GW was making metal in their Memphis plant (maybe plastic too? maybe in Baltimore too?). This stopped around the late 2000s.

This is fuzzy but I seem to recall my FLGS (in midtown Manhattan) having a massive sale because they had to clear out lead by a certain day.

But who knows.
