So I get really bored with painting NOTHING but black legion colors and I have meddled with some Nurgle stuff and red and silver schemes. I find that I really enjoy the differences in color schemes a lot when looking at the figures on a shelf. I found myself liking it so much that I really think I'm gonna paint my army whatever suits my fancy at the time of build, the bulk of my force will probably still be painted black and gold though.
Now the main trouble here is that I still kind of want them to have a legion name but I couldn't find a chaos legion that would have elements from multiple different legions. So I decided to just try and create a legion name and run under that banner. I was the thinking the Lost or forgotten legion and the general flimsy story is they are chaos elements that got lost or forgotten somewhere and just happened to link up and now they go around causing chaos throughout the galaxy.
Literally just an excuse to paint whatever the hell I want. I don't play with anyone that would really care but I would like to know if anyone else has tried something similar and just in general what everyone thinks.
Don't try to poke more holes in it I already know the odds of death guard meeting night lords, thousand sons and other factions after getting lost is really low and it just doesn't make sense either.

Black Legion has lots of subgroups (look for Bringers of decay, hounds of Abaddon or Children of torment) which all use their own scheme, connected by Black in some parts though. So you don't have to make up your own Legion.
Another idea would be to make them warbands of small groups of Renegades that pledged their allegiance to the Black Legion.

Essentially with Black Legion everything is possible, though for some coherency it would be advised to paint something Black on everybody.

If by really low you meant 100%, then you'd be correct. Because those odds are exactly whatever the author needs them to be to make that moments plot work. And since in this case you're the author....

You also don't have to worry about it making sense. A) it's CHAOS, B) I assure you GW has written some pretty nonsensical crap themselves. So you're in fine company.

I think it was the old Eye of Terror Codex that had mention of the Black Legion during a crusade being made up of war bands from all different Legions and cults. I'd been planning on having each squad of mine painted in different colours. So coming back in now I've got a small squad of guys in Night Lords colours, another as Word Bearers, another Iron Warriors and my Berzerkers are started in another scheme. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but since I'm going to want to repaint 20+ year old paintjobs now anyway, I'm thinking I may try to make them more cohesive.

But if you want to do them looking like a mixed bag of guys, I see no reason not to. Only possible issue I can see would be if you ended up wanting to run them as different detachments using different Legion keywords. If every squad looks very different it could make it more difficult to remember which are in which detachment.

Take a look at what I've been painting and modelling: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/725222.page

You're in luck as there actually is a Warband that is exactly what you want, granted it's fairly old lore now from the 4th Edition CSM codex, called the Warriors of Aggannor. They have no provided color scheme or iconography (so you can come up with your own), and the entirety of their lore is that,

"A bunch of Chaos space marines and renegade marines from different legions/chapters got tired of working for their original bosses.
But then one day they met Aggannor who was a really awesome Chaos Lord that everyone liked.
So the unhappy marines joined him and they all raided the domain of the corpse emperor and lived happily ever after.
Also because Aggannor was such a cool guy he didn't make any of his marines repaint their armor. What a bro."

So yeah, basically they are like a Chaos version of Deathwatch, except you don't have to paint them all black. Though I would recommend adding something that marks them as all being members of the same warband (like a matching shoulder icon or something).
