Hey all

I have a metal Ragnar Blackmane model, it's not very well painted, and I'd like to repaint it as I feel I can now do a slightly better job of it.

However I'm wary of wasting my time.

Recently I stripped my 1990s Blood Angels Captain model, the original Captain Tycho. However I feel that where it was poorly defined, particularly the knee pads, that even though it looks better than it did, it doesn't quite look as good as it should.

I haven't checked the Ragnar Blackmane model but...

...would I be better off buying a new Ragnar Blackmane, given that it's now made of resin, would it be any crisper in detail? Or are finecast just as susceptible to being poorly defined as the original metal models?

Finecast is not resin, it's a resin-like substance designed to maximize frustration and casting flaws. Metal models may have soft detail in places, but finecast will have a bubble where the face used to be and crumble to useless scrap if you breathe on it too hard.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Since the same master will have been used to make the mould for both the original metal and subsequent finecast version it's unlikely the resin will be any better 7

(and if its is finecast resin it's likely to be worse especially if the casting was done in the early days of finecast rather than one done recently)

Metal all the way. Finecast is the stuff of the devil...
Brother do yourself a favour and just stay awya from finecast. Dont do it to yourself.

Having been through 3 5 man finecast kits and one HQ I can safetly say I am never going down that road again.

Their's no appreciable difference. I remember after finecast launched someone did a primed model comparison. You could only spot the finecast one due to the miscast problems! Otherwise there was no difference

Technically resin can be slightly better, even from the same master, since a good quality resin is capable of capturing crisper detail and sharper edges than metal.

'Fine'cast, however, is not 'good quality resin'...
