I'm currently finishing up a model for my custom Winged Hussar chapter that I work on for gaks and giggles moreso than any actual in game purpose other than maybe eventually an RPG character figure. I've gotten to the point where the model is mostly converted but I'm done with the important parts of the conversion and am torn whether or not I should busy up the model with practical things like a bolter and scabbard for his sword. He's fortunately already got waist pouches and grenades as part of his original sculpt so at least I don't have to worry about that. Here is my virtual mock up of the model on the right without the extra gear that I did a while back as I haven't actually taken any pics of the model tonight after finishing.

I'm thinking about adding a bolter under the left arm and a scabbard under the right hand/helmet. I've always had an interest in "practical" marines (yes.. I fully understand the ridiculousness of a space marine with feathered wings and copious fur trying to be practical!) that are actually equipped with the gear that they both have in the rules standard which doesn't need to be modelled as well as other things that go with them like scabbards and holsters. Does anyone else bat an eyelash at stuff like that for character/hero models or is that the beginnings of OCD manifesting in my hobby? If it were simply a squad model of many then frankly I wouldn't care unless I was making them specifically for a skirmish game like kill team. I'm a bit concerned that the model will be a bit too busy with the extras and that they'll ruin the simplicity of that Amulius model with all of his more realistic scaling. I realize it's difficult to determine without seeing the actual model yet but I'll try and take pictures when I have better light tomorrow to follow up on the post.

Adding this kind of details, I see nothing bad with it. If you have the bits and skills to do it so it looks "natural", go for it.
In this particular case, I would add the gun for sure to show people he has a boltgun. The scabbard is kinda pointless gamewise, but will make a nice detail.

I personally try to customize my characters to a similar point, although with heroic scale weapons and guardsmen it is not that easy, as everything is ridiculously large. Adding pistol holsters or slings to rifles is the least thing you can do if they are not actually holding the gun in combat position. (although I suffer from a dire shortage of empty laspistol holsters when it comes to my sergeants)

Is it an OCD? If yes, so be it and welcome to the club. You'll be known as "the guy who's models have it all"

Thanks. Here is an example last year of what I consider successful efforts to busy up a primaris (painted) and unsuccessful (unpainted) where I went too far IMO. I never painted the guy on the left as it felt too busy largely due tot eh grenade attachments to the chest. I won't be doing that particular mistake again but am more cognizant of making a similar mistake. I'll have pics both with and without the added bits later today.

I did some test fits yesterday and it looked good so I glued them in. In retrospect, I might have preferred to glue the bolter a bit more forward and lower than I did but the barrel sticks out just enough to be noticeable without being cluttered.

I think it looks good! Looking forward to seeing it painted.
