I don't see any rule preventing it or saying that he can only cast powers from Maelfic discipline - only that he can normally only generate them before the battle from the Maelfic list.

Yes, he is a valid target for the Chaos Familiar stratagem and can use the power from the Dark Hereticus list. The only restriction is on the powers he generates at the start of the battle.
