Hello,

In a recent game my opponent Mobbed up several lines of Grots, combining them into 60 model or so squads that stretched in a bubble wrap ring around his corner of the board several times in layers. I shoot at one line of grots units, killing several models, but he removes the casualties from several feet away in the same mobbed up line of grots. This is well outside of the range of the guns I used, and essentially ensured that the models within range of my unit shooting remained in place since 'the casualties of the unit I shot were still removed since they were part of the same unit', despite, again, being models who were several feet outside of my gun range.

To clarify, also, I'm still learning 8th edition and don't get a chance to play often. I'm not advocating going back to the 7th edition 'closest dies' rule set, but it seems pretty naff when I shoot a gobbo and his buddy well beyond my reach is the one who takes the bullet. :/

Wanted to clarify on the legality of this.

From page 181 of the Main Rulebook under 'Allocate Wounds' (emphasis added):

Allocate Wound: If an attack successfully wounds the target, the player commanding the target unit allocates the wound to any model in the unit (the chosen model does not have to be within range or visible to the attacking unit). If a model in the target unit has already lost any wounds, the damage must be allocated to that model.

The player who owns the unit chooses which models are removed.

Your opponent was right that they can be any models he likes from the unit. Range isn’t a consideration for casualty removal.

As an addendum to the answers above: you're free to rationalize this however you want. Maybe the "closest" one did die and the others moved in to fill the gap. Imagination is a big part of the tabletop experience.

He's not permitted to use the 'Mob Up' stratagem on Gretchin. From the Codex Orks FAQ:

Page 126 – Stratagems, Mob Up
Change the first and second sentences of this Stratagem to read:
‘Use this Stratagem at the end of your Movement phase, before setting up any reinforcement units in your army on the battlefield (if any). Select two <Clan> Boyz units from your army that are within 2" of each other.’

Even pre-errata you couldn't use Mob Up on Gretchin units because of the Grots rule.

True. Some people do miss the 'Grots' rule on page 124 of the codex. The change to the 'Mob Up' stratagem is just easier for the OP to prove to his opponent that it doesn't work on Gretchin (which his opponent should have known already).

Yeah, Mob Up doesn't work on Grots. I had kinda assumed he was just using the term to represent several individual layers of Grots that were in a bunch, since you'd have to wait until at least turn 2 to get a 60 Gretchin Mob anyway.

This was somewhat how Fantasy worked, you pulled casualties from the back ranks as those models would have moved forwards to fill in... the main difference being they didn't still get to fight. Now they do, and I'm pretty much OK with that.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.
