I have been looking desperately recently for a solidly good Alpha Legion paint scheme. I've come across several that seem just right but would tend to produce some inconsistent or tricky results.

  • Using Soulstone Blue and Waystone Green (Gem Paints from Citadel). Main issue being that these paints are very thick, sticky, and probably aren't meant to be used on something as big as a Space Marine... more meant for Gems in armor as well as gemstones on bases, etc. Though, if you can layer it smoothly and correctly, it does give a good result (at least on the picture of the Shoulder Pad that I saw).

  • Using two coats of Guilliman Blue, one coat of Waywatcher Green, and one last coat of Guilliman Blue. Glazes can be tough to work with. They can also be tough to get to stick in a certain place as they tend to act a lot like shades which flow into recesses rather than stay on top of surfaces. Also, four coats of glaze over the entire armor straight out of the pot may begin to clog some detail.

  • Using Greenstuff World's Colorshift paint PSYCHOTIC ILLUSIONS. IMHO, this paint provides the closest to perfect Alpha Legion look. But, I've heard issues with it not being able to be easily applied with a brush (if at all). So, if you make a mistake, you're stuck trying to fix the mistake with an airbrush which isn't easy unless you have an airbrush made for detail work (and detail level airbrushes can be very pricey).

  • THEN I CAME ACROSS THIS ONE late in the afternoon. IMHO, this is the best solution we have out there for a metallic teal that can be applied with either a brush or an airbrush, and I figured I'd share it: https://www.fauxhammer.com/tutorials/how-to-paint-alpha-legion-tutorial-2019/

I've seen that one by Fauxhammer, but...

There's now an even easier and better way to do it. Check it out.

I've seen that one. And, I agree that looks great. I *might* have to give the Terradon Turquoise a shot when it comes out... but we still have a couple of weeks. That said, check out the PSYCHOTIC ILLUSIONS results. Again, this is by far my favorite result. I'll have to see more of the Terradon Turquoise when it actually releases here in the States.

EDIT: That said, I wonder if people will come up with some better ideas for base primer colors for Alpha Legion... maybe starting with Leadbelcher and laying down smooth layers of Ironbreaker, Runefang Steel, and Stormhost Silver. That might make for even a better metallic look for the armor.

  • I too came across this, and got a bottle of that teal paint. Havent painted any model yet, but did try it out on a spare part I had to see how it covered and to compare black vs grey primer.

Paint seems a little thick, but goes on fairly translucent, so took 3 or 4 coats before I was happy. Painting with a brush this is.

I noticed the same. The paint is thick, and while it says quick drying on the bottle.. not so much (only thinned it with water, so no drying retarder). On the plus side, this delay in drying time does allow for fixing of mistakes since the paint is rather thick. So, for example, if you are brushing it on, and it collects in a recess where a shade should be instead, simply rinse and dry off your brush, then move the paint around with your brush. So, a nice, smooth look is very possible. Agreed, though... thinned down enough to not clog details, it seems like it has the covering ability of Stormhost Silver. So, It took me three to four coats as well to get it done. But, it did seem to go on well.

I tried it on two Chosen from the Dark Vengeance box that I hadn't even primed until last night as well as a Mark IV Space Marine from Betrayal at Calth. I have to say that I really like the way the Betrayal at Calth Marine turned out more than the Chosen... but I was painting the entire model in metallic teal. I'll paint over this paint to get the trim, cloth, etc. when the time comes. I want to see how well this paint goes on with my airbrush at some point.

Interestingly enough, I was able to pick it up from a hobby shop on the way home from work. And, two 59ml bottles of the DecoArt Dazzling Metallics Teal cost me less that a single 12ml pot of even the least expensive GW/Citadel paint.

I've been trying the same teal paint (my local art store had to order it, but they gave me a discount so I didn't mind).

What I've been doing is basecoating with a silver color then layering the teal over it. It takes fewer coats to achieve a good color.

I prefer to buy from miniature manufacturers that *don't* support the overthrow of democracy.
