Going on a work trip to Texas over the next two months, and decided to take my old laptop with me for gaming. It's got nothing for a graphics card except an integrated intel chip, so my limit seems to be things as far up as Wolfenstein: New Order, and that chugs badly at times. But still, impressed that it can run it.

Can anyone recommend some older games I could Steam or GoG for the trip? Right now looking at BG:2 (which I have), or maybe Neverwinter Nights 2.

Thoughts, suggestions, ideas, all welcome.

Thanks!

Carmageddon is the best game ever released.

Fact.

DoW and Xcom for some reason do not work at all. I think it's the particle effects. Just melt my screen.

I was thinking games with an engaging story. I'm not much for arcade style romps.

Amnesia dark descent has a pretty decent story and atmosphere.

You could go oldschool and get Deus Ex 1 (its an FPS but no where near an arcade shooter). Super story in it.

Oh wow, Deus Ex. I completely forgot about that. What if I went even further back and did Realms of the Haunting. That is a great old school point and click shooter/rpg.

Could also get Baldurs Gate 1/2 or Fallout 2?

Despite what people say I really liked the story in Divinity OS but am not sure the 2015 laptop would run it.

Age of Empires 2 is also still very fun and can be sort of relaxing if you just play a slow build up game VS the AI.

Carmageddon has a story. You have a car, people want to kill you. Kill them first. With your car.

Or race them, or whatever.

Funny things:

DoW 1, runs like cake. DoW 2, choppy, but playable unless the guard are all shooting at once...

CoH? Runs like dog crap. CoH2? Runs oddly well. NO SENSE WAS MADE THIS DAY./

CoH probably unoptimized unlike CoH2, altough I doubt in a mp battle full off arty that it should run better.

then again i don't know.

How old is old. GoG has some great old games like Knights and Merchants or Heroes of Might and Magic III (the absolute best one). Might and Magic 7 the RPG on GoG is also a favorite, pretty dated but fun nevertheless. OpenRA is for C&C Tiberium Dawn, Red Alert 1 and Dune. Great games but light on the story if that is the main point.

Bit newer perhaps Red Alert 2 on GoG. Maybe the re-released Titan Quest on Steam can run on your laptop, its quite old as well.

Maybe Thea on Steam? Its relatively new but graphics wise its not that amazing, great Eastern European mythology. Sunless Sea for the writing? Shouldn't be graphics heavy.

Don't forget about Steam refunds if you want to try and see what runs!

If it runs this is a real gem.

I support the notion for Baldurs Gate 1/2 and Icewind Dale alongside Fallout 1 and 2. AoE 2 is also a great game

I started BG2 last night, and I can't get over how much better it is than BG1. I don't really know what it is either, but it just seems, more intuitive?

For instance, the weapon swapping has a clear indicator as to which weapon might be better. Identifying items is now semi-automatic, whereas before it was a convoluted process of spell casting or paying lots of money. Party AI is more responsive and vastly more intelligent.

How people rank this game under BG1 blows my mind. BG1's story sucked, combat sucked, the character creation was abysmal, there were only 3-4 viable choices, and the party members were all hot garbage. WHO DECIDED TO GIVE THE FIGHTER 14 STRENGTH?

It is more intuitive and better laid out, it also shows that the developers learned a lot with BG1, and used said experiences well.

Ahhhhh NwN 1&2. How I have strived to forget thee.

The games where you pick a fighter class, or you go to hell. Because nothing survives melee. All powerful god-sorcerer? That fireball is useless if you never cast it, and you can't cast it when the fighter with 12 attacks per round buries his axe in your forehead.

Then again, I have more started characters in that game then any other RPG except Skyrim.
