I am a returning player having last played the game in 5th edition.

My boggle is this:-

When making my list using BattleScribe it gives me the option of taking a Venerable Dread with two twin-linked autocannons and also for the 'Vortimer Pattern Razorback' but when looking in the Codex this isn't an option.

I haven't purchased Chapter Approved or Vigilus yet but can someone tell me if the rules for this are in one of those and if so which one?

Or is BattleScribe wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Venerable Dread with two twin-linked autocannons

For this you need WH40k Index: Imperium 1 - it's out of print so you'll have to go looking on Ebay etc

'Vortimer Pattern Razorback'

This one is in Imperial Armour, Index: Forces of the Adeptus Astartes from Forge World.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

+ the Designers Notes
They tell you how to use the (GW) Index books in conjunction with the codices & you might need to point to them to prove to someone that "No, I'm not trying to pull something on you. My ___ IS still legal in this edition."

Another way to do it is not to take any options in battlescribe that you cannot justify with a paper product or another digital one. For instance, my Tiger Sharks (in battlescribe at least) can upgrade their Burst Cannons with Cyclic Ion Blasters, but I haven't been able to justify it anywhere (else), so I have never done so.

Thanks for your help.

I also have Daemon, CSM, AM & Eldar armies so was wondering if there was a central list covering what was current across the game.

*this is going to cost me a fortune*

Well, its actually great that playing Index units is allowed.
Maybe not in tourneys - one should ask the organizers.
Tools like battlescribe keep track on this.

Every day my decision to make this list pays off! https://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Current_Documents_Required_To_Play_Warhammer_40%2C000_8th_Edition

I second the recommendation to use Battlescribe, even if it has the occasional error.

That list of current books is great thanks.

I have managed to get my hands on index: imperium 1 and have a further query.

Under the GK section there is no venerable dreadnought listed but there is one listed in the Space Marine section. Does this mean GK can take anything from the Space Marine section and remain 'battle forged'?

The Grey Knights section should have a list of the units from Space Marines you may assign Grey Knights as the Chapter.

Page 181 of Index: Imperium 1 lists the units that may be taken by Grey Knights from the generic Adeptus Astartes list.
