I've searched and searched and not found a good discussion of this rule. I have a simple question because I believe someone played it wrong at a tournament I was playing at.

Yarrick was on one wound. I did 6 wounds with stomp attacks and he failed 4 saves. He said he only had to roll 1 3+ stay alive and the rest of the wounds were discarded. I read the rule book and it says only excess 'damage' from a 'single attack' is lost. So each failed save is it's own 'single attack' so he has to roll 4 dice and the only thing that is mitigated is whether the stomp does 1-3 damage which isn't important here.

Am I playing the rule correctly?

Thanks

"Roll a D6 each time Commissar Yarrick loses his final wound; on a roll of 3+ that wound is not lost"

You never discard excess damage with this ability, I don't know where either of you are getting that. It works very similarly to Disgustingly Resilient and other similar abilities.

Say Yarrick is on 2 wounds and suffers a 4 damage unsaved wound. He loses 1 wound normally, then he rolls Iron Will up to 3 times until he fails one. If he fails any, he dies.

In your example, he would have to roll for each and every point of damage inflicted, and a single 1 or 2 on any of them would kill him.

The damage
inflicted is equal to the Damage
characteristic of the weapon used
in the attack. A model loses one
wound for each point of damage
it suffers. If a model’s wounds
are reduced to 0, it is either slain
or destroyed and removed from
play. If a model loses several
wounds from a single attack and
is destroyed, any excess damage
inflicted by that attack is lost and
has no effect.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
So a single stomp attack that did 3 damage would lose excess damage if yarrick was on one wound. He would go to zero wounds after the first wound from the damage and the other two are wasted. He then rolls and on a 3+ he is on one wound. That's how its played. And then he has to do it for each failed save

No, you lose 1 wound for each point of damage, and these single wounds are processed one by one. You don't lose any excess damage, you roll for every one once Yarrick is down to 1 wound remaining. It's the exact wording of Disgustingly Resilient etc and so will work the same way.

Yarrick on 1 wound, single Stomp attack doing 3 damage:

Roll Iron will. If fail die, if pass roll Iron Will. If fail die, if pass roll Iron Will. If fail die, if pass survive.

In your actual game, with your 4 unsaved attacks, you would average 8 damage meaning Yarrick would have had a 4% chance of survival (making 8 consecutive 3+ rolls).

BRB update 1.5 (this was already added in 1.4)

Q: When rolling for abilities such as ‘Disgustingly Resilient’
or ‘Tenacious Survivor’ against attacks which inflict multiple
wounds, do you roll to ignore each individual wound inflicted
by the attack, or do you roll only once to ignore all the wounds
inflicted by the attack?
A: Roll to avoid each wound lost separately.

When yarrick has 1 wound left and he gets 3 points of damage from a single attack he has to roll 3 times for his iron will ability.

As the others have said, you need to roll once for every point of damage that would be the final wound removed.

So essentially it's just a feel no pain roll. Thanks for clarifying

Exactly. With the added condition that you don't start using it until he's one 1 wound, but otherwise it functions the same.
