When returning to the hobby, the first thing that I was attracted to was a Dice tray for enjoying the Way of the Tiger series. Rolls were often noisey and it seemed a posh thing to have!

So I made one from a shabby picture frame, PVA glue and lined it with green felt. It is my favourite item above all others and was an enjoyable DIY project. Now I'm thinking of making a second one, but more professionally.

Do you use a dice tray? If so, would you mind sharing a picture? Is it just a wooden box to stop your dice rolling off the table edge(or for strategically knocking aside your opponents miniatures) or is it something to jazz up your table? Was it self made or bought?

Easiest thing I have seen is one of the small GW minitures cases for things like Kill team/warcry. remove the foam and you have space to roll a bunch of dice when open. it also makes a handy place to carry dice,tape measure, cards, objective markers etc. for your game.

I was looking at large thick edge picture frames and possibly stack 2 or 3 to get a nice wall, also when looking at round ones they have a nice curved wall so probably add a 45° for the dice bounce back.

It doubles as both a case to put dice, counters and such inside for transport to the game and then once you take the lid off you've got a dice try. The felt covering means that it doesn't make too much noise when rolling.

The Koplow dice tray and its knockoffs are simple, effective, and cheap enough it's not worth my effort to make anything. I've seen quite a few people use trays that are made from mouse pad and have buttons at corners. They might be useful for games like Infinity of WMH where you don't really roll that many dice. They can also be customized with whatever pic you like.
If I am ever to use a dice tray, it will definitely be the event exclusive WHC tray. As for now, I don't use any - I like my dice rolling free.

I like these because they unsnap and lay flat with your books.

Honestly, the best ones you can get for cheap - which are suitable to rolling at 40K scale, etc. are "serving trays", often with fake leather. I picked up two from Target maybe 5-6 years back. About $17 a pop?

Mine are something like this, with a fabric "floor" though.



The ones I have are maybe 12"x18"? So big, but suitable for rolling large handfuls of dice - and the side walls are maybe 1.5", so more than tall enough to keep them all in the box.

KR accessory tray. Bought it to kick me over the free shipping threshold, but I enjoy it a lot. Holds all my stuff when traveling, splits into two trays for play.

I have two of the KR carriers like shown above as well, and I concur they're good for storing dice, cards, tokens, etc. I find they're way too small for rolling dice for 40K but work fine for role-playing games or skirmish games where you're not throwing 20-30-40-50+ dice.

I just got a bamboo cutlery tray from Target. Pulled out the dividers in 10 seconds. Has a decent rolling area up top and a small area for keeping unused dice down the bottom. Effective 12 bucks.

That's what I use. Cheap, scrunches up to fit in my bag, perfect!

Most dice trays seem to be designed with preventing the dice from rolling across the tabletop and falling on the floor. But what about noise? What feeling might anyone have about reducing the sound made by dice being rolled?

Do you prefer the sound of dice or have you purchased a tray with noise reduction in mind?
