Isn't there stratagem to hasten up doctrine change though so you could get it by turn 2 at least? Main assaults tends to happen on T2 anyway after chaff is cleared so that doesn't sound too bad. Though for stratagems you need CP which means soup has advantage again.
We could ask 9W Guilliman, or the host of 5W IC's. Anyone want to guess how many wounds a Captain has?

And then it assumes that you fail killing by just 1. That 5 wound character is going to die to two D4 attacks just as well as 2 D5 attacks. My ork warboss rarely actually NEEDS that extra D from warlord trait in practice for example. And of course you also need to get to combat and get succesfull wound(s).
It's rather specific case that's not going to happen every game. More CP meanwhile would happen every game not to mention other benefits of soupping...That's a lot of benefits lost for extra damage in h2h.

Actually the 5W character dies from 1 5W attack. Technically you need three 5W attacks, the first one to miss, the second one to hit and bounce off the Invuln, the third to kill. You need 6 4W attacks. 2 to miss, two to bounce off the invuln, and 2 to deal 8 wounds only 5 of which count.

I'm currently putting together a combined force of Guard and Marines. As it's largely an exercise in trying to get a useable army together without me getting bored with painting too much of the same thing in one go, I'm still planning to do a soupy force. But I was always intending to gradually add to it, so I'll probably end up in a position to play an all-Marines force at some point.

Since I often play Ravenwing, the changes do nothing to my army so will soup. DAs will need doctrines if they want us to all play mono.

Marine Allies will be the way to roll. You'll get your doctrines although you might lose that Chapter extra bonus, which won't be T2 at earliest for the Ultramarines.

on using them as soup or not... idk.
I have lots of marines but have painted my imperial knights, imperial guard, and even to an extent custodes to all match so likely in narrative events i will still soup them if I am on the imperium side.

My regular 3rd Ed. opponent is passively pressuring me to play 8th. If I DO play 8th, I won't be mixing forces. I'm kind of old dog that way.
