Hello,

As with many people here, I am a recent re-convert to miniatures etc. after many years away. I got started again late last year after having an epiphany over christmas that I don't want to just sit around playing videogames and having nothing to show for the time other than RSI. However between now and then I've moved house twice, finally getting my own place with a dedicated space for minis and gaming. As such I haven't really done a lot and have something of a motivation blockage - I have all these models, paints and brushes sat in front of me (and the requisite pile of shame) yet find it hard to actually get started. I suspect this is the usual fear of "getting it wrong"/"waiting to start painting until i'm good at it" issue that plagues everyone starting a creative endeavour, especially given how amazing models by extremely skilled painters look all over the internet (here included). I think I need this printed out over my desk:

So, following motivation advice I found online, I'm going to try to post things here to kickstart things a bit more than sitting here staring at them hoping they assemble and paint themselves. My planned project(s) are as follows:

Mainline projects:

Combined 40K Chaos forces of Emperor's Children CSM, Renegades & Heretics, Chaos Knights

This is what I have made the most "progress" on and was one of the first things I thought about when coming back to wargaming. I loved the look of the original Noise Marines so decided to to an entire army of them. So far I have a couple of very badly painted chaos marines (that may well get stripped down the line once my technique and colour scheme develops more as they were quite blobby BEFORE I got my hands on them) and a handful of unfinished kitbash projects:

The Knights are still in their boxes as I haven't settled entirely on a colour scheme - I want to theme them as a household that got so obsessed with their heraldry, honour and status they eventually fell to Slaanesh. Like the Flesh Eater Courts in Age of Sigmar, they still see themselves as upstanding and noble crusaders, even though they aren't. As such I want to keep them fairly pristine and ornate but with a chaotic edge, rather than going down the 'boobs, tentacles and loudspeakers' route which is the most common for Slaanesh Knights, some of which will be done with my Emperor's Children anyway. As for the Renegades and Heretics, they will be the Knights' retinue, using models from age of sigmar, blackstone fortress and other sources. I'm going to paint up the renegade militia like Cadians from 2nd edition 40k, but with extremely worn and rusted gear, like they haven't gotten anything new for a long time. Current progress is some assembled models with a couple of squads based, one of which has been undercoated. I know they're a sub-optimal army but I love the concept so much I had to go for them. Nothing worth posting pictures of yet.

Custom Blood Angels successor chapter - Blood Jaguars

Back when I was young I came up with an idea for an Aztec-themed space marine chapter, but it never went anywhere. On my return I found that Someone else had come up with a much better version of the same idea, so I'm going to do that. Zero progress, all models in boxes, but I have some test models lined up and plan to print my own decals for the complex chapter badge.

Gaslands

I love the concept of Gaslands - take a load of cheaply available toy cars and make a Death Race game out of them. I have done the first part but not so much the second. Here is my one finished Gaslands car from the pile I have in the corner still in their packages:

Secondary projects:
Blood Bowl - I have the 3rd edition box from back in the day, but picked up the new game to actually play, along with a Skaven team.
Combat Zone - wonderfully cheap and cheerful skirmish from EM4 Miniatures with equally cheap yet detailed 80s cyberpunk gang members and cops.

That's enough for now, if you read this thanks for looking, we'll see how I get on.

That guitar-wielding daemon prince is on another level of cool!

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

Yes! The chaos rock band is going to be great!

I agree with your dreadnought. And with conversions that good, they will look great even with simple paint jobs. You can’t go wrong with a simple light base coat and wash, or trying some Contrast paints.

Yea man, that daemon prince is real

Excited to see where you take the EC, love me a good Slaanesh marine project (*he said while dreaming of getting work done on his own Slaanesh marine project*). I dig the colors on the original dudes you posted - especially the jaguar print, please keep it around! - and the execution honestly isn't horrific

Thanks, I'm pretty happy with the colour scheme. The leopard print is really easy, however now Contrast paints are out i'm thinking of incorporating them to get some metallic candy effects, probably the blue accents. The only thing i'm having problems with is the basing - given how vibrant the chaos marines are I think I need to go for something lighter but pale, like marble or something.

Thanks, I'm always my worst critic and the camera often reveals things that can't be seen in person. The guitar took a bit of sourcing, but is one of the 'Guitar Hero Mix and Match' series:

I think i've done this right, here are a couple of shots of my test models for the Blood Jaguars, the orange guy is the standard space marine, the black is a 'Black Jaguar Warrior' Reiver, with jaguar/leopard print camo (an attempt at) an obsidian knife and jade-like gun casing. Researching aztec use of colour etc has been really interesting for this, my current wip is a test model for the death company, who rather than black are going to be turquoisey-blue. Looking at them as pictures they're more amateurish than i thought, but i keep telling myself its about the journey not the destination, being average at a hobby is fine and so on.

Thanks, although in hindsight they are too far apart, so in future I'll do them closer together but just on the shoulders, knees, helmet and maybe parts of the backpack with the rest plain dark grey, it will look better I think.

Doing the pattern is easy, blob nuln oil onto the surface and let it pool (careful not to have it run into others) and when it's dry put a smaller and slightly off-centre blob of mechanicus standard grey in the middle. Also the nuln oil is quite glossy when pooled together so in future I might go over the panels with some lahmian medium to matte it down a bit.
