Wow i am actually getting old now! So i was into 40k in 94/95 - made a major mistake at the time and stole a metal model from the shop (a dark angels librarian..I remeber) - Got caught, banned, and that was that my hobby was over - remember this was before the internet and for me postal ordering wasnt going to cut it and there was no other shops around for miles so I stopped collecting. - 24 years later I have returned to it. (im really not a bad person, that was the one time i stole in my life and always regretted it) I am now 36 and live in the south UK.

Picked up a copy of space hulk when it was rereleased in 2014 and have only just got round to making a go of paining it. Dont have any friends in the hobby so painting is my main focus but i do live near a good gaming center - I might give it a go and see if I can get a game sometime.

Welcome back! We all do things we regret as kids. 40k may seem overwhelming now, but I suggest just finding an army you like again and starting with a small force. See if they have a kill team night or something at the shop. Good luck!

Active armies, still collecting and painting First and greatest love - Orks, Orks, and more Orks largest pile of shame, so many tanks unassembled most complete and painted beautiful models, couldn't resist the swarm will consume all
Armies in disrepair: nothing new since 5th edition oh how I want to revive, but mostly old fantasy demons and some glorious Soul Grinders in need of love

From a DnD gamer's perspective, it does take quite some time to adjust alignment. From chaotic neutral, welcome to neutral good!

Thanks guys

A small force would be good, I always liked space marines but im a bit confused with the new primaris space marines and how they will go with older ones. From a painting point of view no problem but I may like to play one day - Its the games tactics that really draws me in - command and conquer is my fav pc game series and the warhammer 40k game just has so much to get your teeth into its really appealing to me. But you are right, its massively overwhelming right now!

I will focus on painting my space hulk set for now, im also toying with the idea of making a blood angels army but again im a bit confused with Primaris SM lol.

Welcome to dakka sir!

Primaris are lorewise essentialy super super soldiers, being upgraded spacemarines. In chapters such as the Blood Angels, they shore up the chapter's manpower and so live with "standard" marines.

They have a codex and units of their own however.

Modelwise, they are taller and larger than "oldmarines". Many units have dinstinct looks (reivers...) That said they could also serve well by representing "true scale marines" where the older space marines model are a bit short.

40k: Necrons/Imperial Guard/ Space marines
Bolt Action: Germany/ USA

Thank you space marines were always expensive points wise so im guessing Primaris even more so?

Actually I need to learn more about all the new factions since I left - also the name changes, Imperial guard are no longer called that, do you know why the change?

Hi Hudson, welcome back chap. Know exactly what you mean about one store years ago, saying that we still only have one store where I live in Somerset today but hey we have the net these days so it’s not all bad.

Poeple say it's to make the whole copyrighted, since for example imperial guard is a very common (even historical) name. However most names don't come out of nowhere, astra militarum used to be the "administrative" term while imperial guard was the widespread, low class term.

But don't worry, choose the army you like most and you'll progressively catch up with the lore changes!
