The controversy potentially being that although the model is destroyed when you activate this stratagem there was an enemy model within 1" at the time of its destruction.

If you have a pistol. If the Strat is worded the same as all the other similar ones, you shoot as if it were the shooting phase or fight as if it were the fight phase. And both of those have restrictions based on whether you're within 1" or not.

The stratagem does indeed have the same "as if it was the..." phase wording. In theory there's a potential chain of events where your model was killed in assault by a model that has then died itself and would then be free to shoot without the within 1" restrictions.

Imagine you're facing your mirror army, their character dies in your assault, uses this ability, manages to kill your character, you use this ability, nothing is left in 1" so now you actually can't fight, but can shoot as more normally normal than an enemy model within 1"
