Subject: Bodyguards for a tank?
|
 |
Ork Admiral Kroozin Da Kosmos on Da Hulk
|
With the new Ultramarines supplement, Chronus was changed to give his character keyword to the tank he is commanding.
If the predator/landraider Chronus is commanding takes damage from a lascannon shot, can the Victrix Honour Guard take damage if they are within 3" of it?
|
7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

The Victrix ability does not specify anything other than ULTRAMARINES and CHARACTER, so yes it would work on a CHARACTER Land Raider etc.

Yes, they can. But I'd use normal Company Veterans for that. They're cheaper.

And better apparently. The honour guard seems to be taking 1 MW per damage done, while the veterans only lose one model even when it by a Thundercoil harpoon.
I'm going to hate this so much...

Both abilities are similiar. With CSB you have to roll for each wound. HG only makes one roll. But both suffer as many MW as the number of wounds the character would suffer.
Command Squad Bodyguard
Roll a dice each time a friendly <CHAPTER> CHARACTER loses a wound whilst they are within 3" of this unit; on a 2+ a model from this squad can intercept that hit - the character does not lose a wound but this unit suffers a mortal wound.
Honour Guard
When a friendly ULTRAMARINES CHARACTER model within 3" of this unit would lose any wounds as a result of an attack made against that model, this unit can attempt to intercept that attack. Roll one D6; on a 2+ that model does not lose those wounds and this unit suffers 1 mortal wound for each of those wounds. Only one attempt can be made to intercept each attack.

Tau can use crisis bodyguards to protect the Longstrike Tank HQ. So I don't see why it wouldn't work here.

No tau player uses crisis bodyguards. Drones are 100 times better. The SP rule turns all wounds into 1 MW, which the drone can ignore on a 5+. The 10 damage from a thundercoil harpoon can be completely nullified by a 10 pt. drone, with the drone walking away without a scratch, ready to completely nullify the second 10 damage thundercoil harpoon shot.

Drones can't guard the tank. Only <infantry> and <battlesuits>. If you want to pass wounds off of Longstrike, then you have to use bodyguards. Which is legal, hence I don't see the units in question for the OP would have any issue either as they appear to have the same basic rule wording.

I simply care a lot less about a degrading rail gun or ion thingy than about four lascannons always hitting on 2+, re-rolling to hit and to wound.
I also didn't work with the last codex, as the tank didn't get the character keyword.

Well... It's a bit silly. But bodyguards leaping in front of a legendary tank does sound quite 40k...

I "hate" to say I find that VERY funny.
I would field it just for how goofy that is.
I am trying to remember if the AM/ IG commander Pask does the same thing (Ah, looked it up: can have a 6 wound Ogryn bodyguard, he IS a character it is a matter of go with the added armor or slab-shield or not worry since he will take mortal wounds anyway, extra goofy: get Nork!).
I would even fancy-up the tank a bit, survivability of a Las-Pred for turn one is looking pretty good.
I have a large Black Templar force but have committed Primaris and all the various character models I have picked up to Ultramarines, so now I have my goofy choice for him.
So yeah, the precedence for bodyguards for tanks seems to be well established.
I guess the only thing is establishing if the cost is worth it which in this case, having some amazing shooting of 4 lascannons is looking like a good thing.

Ogryn bodyguard and nork loyal to the end only works on infantry characters.

Was there an addendum for this? I do not see anything said for "infantry" just a character model which Pask IS:
"Loyal to the End" also has the same wording of an "Astra Militarum character" so no, this works.

Codex AM update 1.1, released ~14 (!) months ago !! What is so hard to check the FAQs for updates ????
Page 102 – Ogryn Bodyguard, Bodyguard
Change the first sentence to read:
‘Roll a D6 each time a friendly Astra Militarum
Infantry Character (excluding Ogryns) loses a
wound whilst they are within 3" of any models with this
ability; on a 3+ the Astra Militarum character does not
lose a wound but one model with this ability suffers a
mortal wound.’
Page 104 – Nork Deddog, Loyal to the End
Change the first sentence to read:
‘Roll a D6 each time a friendly Astra Militarum
Infantry Character (excluding Ogryns) loses a
wound whilst they are within 3" of Nork Deddog; on a 2+
the Astra Militarum character does not lose a wound but
Nork Deddog suffers a mortal wound.’

As has been noted, as was the case with the AM codex this was 100% legal.
I would expect it to go the exact same way as the AM codex however, because I doubt very much that GW meant for AM tanks to not be bodyguard but thinks it's fine for SM tanks.
Enjoy it while it lasts.

I've never heard of Turn Signals on a Leman Russ, but I have heard of Turn Signals on a Land Raider. And I think GW pays for it now... so I can believe they absolutely would protect a Space Marine tank.
