I've bought a random ork lot recently and I've never played the game but I'm curious about kitbashing and conversions. What can I make with the sprues that I have outside what the box actually comes with.

I have
2 ork boyz boxes
1 stormboyz box
1 burna boyz box
1 meganobz box
6 warbikes

I'm wondering, since I've never played and I don't know whats good, what can I build out of this to make cool stuff.

Well originally I got them because I thought they looked cool and I just want to tool around with them. But now that I have them I feel like I might eventually play so I was gonna see if I could maximize them.

I guess my main concern is, if I eventually do play, is there a choice I could make that could potentially ruin a unit or make it ridiculously suboptimal?

In short: potentially.

What I am about to say will undoubtedly cause a bit of a Hoo haaa as opinion on this matter may vary and some people are very vocal one way or another(so lets not go full argument about this eh dakka?)

There is a concept called WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) which a lot of people subscribe to. So what that means is if your models are modelled with a certain loadout they should be played with that load out... The argument goes that your opponent will look at the battlefield and see your units with say choppas and assume they really do have choppas even though you might have not chosen to give them choppas when building your list.(caveat I have zero idea about orks point costs or unit composition…)

Some people will argue that as long as you explain before hand what your squad of boys are loaded out the physical modelling doesn't matter so much etc. YMMV and its a matter to discuss between you and your opponent.

So if you start doing wild conversions and give mixed/random weapons to units that have no access to those weapons in their data sheets this might be frowned upon in your local community as it would confuse people. Most units all have the same loadout in the squad (this may not be the case for some orks units..)

It might be a good idea to have an intro 40k game with someone and later borrow a codex and have a flick through it so you can see what options are available for units and have some basic understanding of what feels useful.

If you just want to go wild and make crazy conversions do it... The rule of cool trumps everything in my books so long as the end result model isn't half the size or twice the size of what its supposed to be I don't think too many people would mind. Maybe worth getting some advice from your local club/player base if you want to consider playing.

I subscribe to WYSIWYG, but from the point of view that it’s easier for me to remember what my own models are equipped with!

Back to the question: the burna box includes dakkaguns to make Lootas (long-ranged shooty Orks), but only enough bodies for those or Burnaz. However you can just use the regular Boyz bodies as they are the same size with a little bit of work - this gets you more mileage from a more expensive kit.

Most Ork units are either lead by a Nob (i.e. Boyz) or made entirely of Nobz (i.e. the Meganobz). A warbike mob can be either (one nob or all nobs), but currently it’s best as a regular unit with one nob. You can use “nobby” bits from the other kits to make the warbiker nob stand out more (there’s an enlarged torso in the Boyz kit).

Boyz can be made with either slugga/choppa (a pistol and an axe) or with shootas (two-handed guns). There’s decent arguments for each.
You can use the rockit launchers and tankbuster bombs to make Tankbusters (an Ork unit where each model has a rokit), but you’ll need 5 of those for a legal unit. Big shootas (the longer versions of shootas) are an upgrade I’d only put in a shoota boyz unit (not a choppa boys unit).

Stormboys don’t really have alot of options, but the Nob can choose a variety of stuff (which is true for most Nobz).
